BIID Update

ONE YEAR ON…

HELEN KEIGHLEY, THE BIID’S EDUCATION DIRECTOR, RECOGNISES THE ONE YEAR MILESTONE IN THE ASSOCIATION’S PROFESSIONAL PATHWAY.

Last April the BIID launched the Professional Pathway, for the first time providing a national, professional standard for interior designers. In its first year, the Pathway has proved to

be a great success helping a growing number of designers move from study through to professional competence. In order to launch the Pathway, the BIID worked closely with designers from the commercial and residential fields, leading design educators and other industry professionals with the collective ambition to make it the cornerstone of the drive towards inspiring great talent and design excellence. It sets a rigorous, new standard for professional competence and was one of the most exciting and significant developments in interior design education for many years. For many, an interior design degree or related qualification is the start point to their career; others may choose to enter the profession without any formal interior design education. The Professional Pathway was designed to be flexible and inclusive

enough to accommodate these varying start points. An increase in the number of new applications to join the Institute at Associate level has already been received since the Pathway was launched last year and these designers will certify their professional competence by demonstrating that they have met national standards. In addition to this number, many of the Institute’s existing Associate members have already transferred over onto the Pathway. The launch of the Professional Pathway marked an innovative development to support candidates on their route into full membership. Previously, designers had to wait until they had sufficient experience and then attend an extensive interview to discuss their work but the Pathway enabled candidates to submit evidence from their practice to meet the requirements in a number of steps without the need to attend any particular event. It also enabled those applying for full membership to submit work online. Interest in the Pathway has increased significantly throughout the year and a number of induction events, providing detailed information, have been well attended reflecting the significance that

designers place on BIID membership. The first year review is now underway and we anticipate more interest as candidates successfully move through the stages. The assessor team has been expanded to 20, all of whom are themselves full members of the Institute and have been trained to support candidates. While the Professional Pathway is aimed at those joining the Institute at Associate level, the BIID’s focus to provide training, support and recognition to the highest level remains an integral part of its mission. Extensive entry requirements into membership ensure BIID members already work to a high standard, and the comprehensive CPD programme nurtures talent and provides professional support to members, who have to accrue at least 20 CPD points annually. The industry is making huge strides in the right direction to confirm a high quality status for interior designers and through the Professional Pathway the sector has taken a huge stride to not just to raise standards for today, but to raise and maintain standards of professionalism for the future. www.biid.org.uk/professionalpathway.php
