Plan of action COUNCILLORS have unani- mously agreed to take the first step towards drawing up a neighbour- hood plan for Tovil. Members agreed an application should be submitted to define the parish boundary – the first stage of drawing up a plan. Itwas said that itwas interesting

that in two recent cases, both the High Court and the Secretary of State had overturned planning ap- peals in favour of neighbourhood plans that did not support devel- opments in those areas.

Chairman chosen

CLLR Glyn Charlton has been elected Chairman of Tovil Parish Council in a two-way vote. He has led the council on an in- terim basis since Cllr Chris Morgan- Jones left the area, and was voted in for a full term at the council’s an-

nual general meeting on May 12. Cllr Derek Mortimer was elected unopposed as vice-chairman.

Yellow lines

THE long-awaited painting of dou- ble yellow lines on both sides of Courtenay Road near the junction with Tovil Road is imminent. Portable “No Waiting” bollards have been placed on the highway in preparation for theseworks.

Tree support

PEARSON’S Landscapes will be asked to look at how the eucalyp- tus tree outside Allnutt Mill Close might be better supported. The meeting heard that the tree

had grown so much that one of the straps around it had broken and it was now leaning over.

Dangerous wall

A SECTION of boundary wall in Church Street near the junction with Church Road has been re- placed with a fence as it was lean- ing out into the highway.

Tackling rubbish issues

THE parish council was updated on progress regarding excess rub- bish in the area. Maidstone Council is to take en- forcement action against the owner of a property at 48 Bea- consfield Road, whose rear garden is unfenced and is full of discarded building materials and associated debris making it an eyesore and technically an “untidy site”. This issue has been ongoing for several months and as well as

being unpleasant to look at, it could be considered a danger to children as the site is so close to the entrance/exit of Archbishop Courtenay Primary School. The landlord of a development

of flats above the betting shop in Church Road, where contami- nated rubbish in a recycling bin needs to be attended to, will also be contacted by Maidstone Coun- cil.

The parish council also dis- Fighting to keep the lights on

COUNTY Councillor Brian Clark said he was getting results on street lighting issues. He said lighting had been rein-

stated throughout the night in Wharf Road nearTovil Footbridge, where there were safety concerns, but reminded councillors that with the county council keen to reduce

PLANS to replace a 1960s bunga- low in Cripple Street with a house, including an annexe for the fam- ily’s parents, were recommended for approval. It was stated that these plans

have been drawn up in close liaison with Maidstone Borough’s Coun- cil’s planning officers and are a significant improvement on the existing property. It is proposed that the new

Gymmoves in

ITWAS reported that the Pegasus Gym Club had moved from Bearsted to its premises at Tovil. Some of the club’s gymnasts

have already represented the country and Tovil Parish Coun- cil looks forward to those indi- viduals, as well as up and coming gymnasts, taking part in the Rio Olympics.

through-the-night lighting a “ro- bust case has to be made for the county council to even look at turning the lights back on for longer”. Hesaid he was also pursuing the

issue of the damaged lamp post in Cave Hill, where he felt night lighting might also be appropriate.

House with annexe agreed

house will be built closer to the road and that the family would live in the existing bungalow while it was being built. Parish councillors recommended

approval of the plans, but asked that the additional accommoda- tion be listed as an annexe to re- strict any plan in future to sell part of the property off separately. The plan has still to be approved by Maidstone Borough Council.

Fete preparations

FINAL plans are being made for Tovil Fete at theArchbishopCourte- nay Primary School on June 21. The venue means everything

could be moved indoors if it rains. Tovil Parish Council is looking for- ward to this first joint venture with the school. Stalls are available for £8 and can

be booked by calling 01622 675628, 07703 349795 or 07825 916930.

Police report CRIME had shown a slight increase inTovil over the last few months, ac- cording to PCSO MattWilliams. He reported criminal damage in- cidents in Forest Hill, Gleneagles Drive and Wharf Road. There were thefts from the build-

ing site in Postley Road, where keys were also taken from a lock-up, and an assault in Tesco. Investigations were continuing. He also reported a motorbike

rider who was riding off-road and along pavements in the Tovil area. The man, described a stocky, bald- ing and aged 30-40, had been spot- ted by councillors, too. Anyone with information is urged

to call 101. Drug issue

A UNITED approach was agreed after concernswere raised about al- leged drug dealing by Tovil foot- bridge. Tovil Parish Council’sCCTVcam-

era at the junction of Church Road and Wharf Road may be tilted to pick up activities in Wharf Road. PCSO Matt Williams said he

would raise the issue with his col- leagues. “The supply of class A drugs is one of our priorities and there are resources that can be steered thisway.” Heasked councillors and the pub-

lic to note the registration numbers of cars making suspicious trips to the area and report them to police.
