Investigation at care home
PRACTICES at a care home in Tovil have been investigated after inspectors expressed serious con- cerns about the way medicines were handed out to elderly resi- dents. The report from the Care Quality Commission after an unannounced visit showed poor and confused record-keeping and dispensing practices at Tovil Green Court. An enforcement action was served on owners Housing 21 calling for rapid improvement at its care home. In an earlier visit to the centre in September last year, the home was pulled up over its management of medicines and its record-keeping. The inspectors this time said that
while residents spoke highly of the service they received, out-of-date files and confusion still posed a risk to elderly residents receiving medicines and treatment. It cited one resident who had

been prescribed more pain relief by her GP, but the paperwork still showed the lower dose should be administered. As a result, the re- port added: “This person told us they were suffering with constant pain.” When asked by the inspector, the
home’s manager said that there had been some confusion about the correct dose, but the GP had not been contacted to find out what the correct dose should be. Aspokesman for the commission
said: “These are fairly serious is- sues with the management of med- icines and we want to get this resolved as quickly as possible. “We have issued Housing 21
with a warning notice and are giv- ing staff the opportunity to address the concerns raised and get them embedded into their routine prac- tices, but we will be back again to check fairly quickly.” Tovil Green Court provides 40
one- and two-bedroom apart- ments, offering independent living in a communal scheme, with from 24-hour care and support services.

downsmail.co.uk Campaigners save play area
A REPRIEVE has been won for the Freshlands Road play area in Allington. Lib Dem campaigner James Willis launched a petition which was pre-
sented to the council by local mum Lauren Sykes, protesting at plans to close the play area – one of 20 parks across the bor- ough threatened by council cuts. After James
stirred local parents into action, the park was reprieved and the play equip- ment will now stay. He said: "I am so pleased for all local residents with small children. The community spirit was inspirational." Parliamentary campaigner for Maidstone and the Weald Jasper Gerard, who is pictured with campaigners, said: “Having met many parents who rely on this play area, I am delighted. It would have been nonsensical to rip out virtually new equipment.”
No to bungalow A PLAN for a bungalow behind Regent House, 355 Loose Road, Maidstone was refused. The home, which would have been built in Pheasant Lane, about 160m south of the junction with Sutton Road, was considered by Maidstone Council to be “at odds with the pattern of development”. Permission for a two-storey home in the same location was refused in February.
Li rescue
FIREFIGHTERS were called to the Travelodge in St Peter’s Street, Maidstone, after eight people got stuck in the lift. None of the group, who were all in their late teens and early 20s, was hurt in the Saturday night incident. The fire crew arrived at 9.50pm and took just over 30 minutes to open the door.
