Choking Treatment
s a parent, I understand that one of the biggest worries is choking in children and particularly babies. Fortunately choking is not very common and easily remedied. By following these steps you should be able to clear the child’s airway.
A Stage 1
• Support the child (over the knee if the child is small enough).
• Deliver 5 sharp back blows between the shoulder blades using the heel of the hand.
• Check to see if the obstruction has cleared.
Stage 2
• If not stand behind the child and place arms around the upper abdomen.
• Place your fist just above the navel thumb side in with other hand on the outside of the fist.
• Perform 5 inward and upward thrusts.
• Check to see if the obstruction has cleared.
Do not perform abdominal thrusts on a baby. Instead put two fingers between the nipples and push inward and upwards REMEMBER: If needed dial 999
