Church defiant aer charity the
THIEVES have targeted St Mary’s in Lenham – one of a falling num- ber of open churches in the area – to steal its charity box. Raiders walked in and put a crowbar to the vestry door, taking keys and cash. The vicar of the church in The Square, Rev Dick Venn, said he wished those involved had turned to the church for help, rather than stealing from it. He added: “If peo- ple are in trouble and come to us we will try to help.” His wife Helen says, in spite of
the raid, the church will remain open towalk-inworshippers. “We have always kept the church open and I can’t see that changing,” she said. “It was only petty cash but the church always needs money, be- cause it’s a Grade II listed building, which is why we formed a new friends’ group last year.

DRIVERS are being warned about lane closures on the Stockbury roundabout as the A249 traffic lights system is re-introduced. The Highways Agency says the
new signals will be “more intelli- gent” and are needed for safety reasons. The roundabout will be closed
overnight in three phases while new technology is installed, light- ing improved, and the roundabout
