downsmail.co.uk More traffic misery on theway

MOTORISTS are bracing them- selves for more diversions, with Spot Lane in Bearsted set to be closed to traffic for eight weeks. Southern Gas Networks says it

will begin work in the road, be- tween Yeoman Way and Royston Road, on May 27 and doesn’t ex- pect to be finished until July 18. The work will involve laying a new plastic gas main. The news coincides with the on-

going closure of Upper Street through Leeds village and ahead of KCC’s plan to close Willington Street for six to eight weeks for resurfacing work once the B2163 through Leeds re-opens. Downswood resident Mark Turner said: “There is already se-

vere congestion along Willington Street because of the Leeds clo- sure, so closing this road for eight weeks seems peculiar. “About 90% of people living in Downswood drive up Spot Lane

and I assume the diversion will be along Willington Street, which is a dangerous junction and busy with traf- fic already diverted along there.” Southern Gas

Networks says ac- cess will be main- tained to residents' driveways but a signed diversion

will be in place via MallardsWay, Deringwood Drive, Willington Street, Madginford Road and Royston Road, in both directions. Mr Turner added: “Eight weeks seems very long. Is it just going to

be one bloke and a van? I expect the Romans built a road quicker than that.” Hannah Adam, spokesman for Southern Gas Networks, said: “We would like to apologise to residents and road users for any inconvenience that may be caused by our essentialworks andwe will be doing everything we can to minimise disruption. "We appreciate that roadworks

can be frustrating. However, the new plastic pipe has a minimum lifespan of 80 years. This means that once the work is complete, Bearsted residents will be able to enjoy a continued safe and reliable gas supply for many years to come."

Progress being made to get Leeds road reopened

UTILITY services damaged by the road collapse in Leeds village will be reinstated over the Bank Holi- day weekend. The county council says contrac-

tors will be working 12 hours a day to re-lay water, electric and BT services to homes, with the aim of getting work finished by May 6. Temporary supports will need to be installed while the specialist ex-

cavation work is carried out for safety reasons and to minimise the risk of further damage to the listed cottages next to the road, still un- dergoing stabilisation work. Work to reinstate the main sewer

line was completed last week. AKCCspokesman said: “The re- instatement of the utilities is a par- ticularly complex and sensitive task as the electricity, gas and water

all serve a large proportion, if not all, of the village. “By extending the temporary

works along the full length of the site we will be able to undertake all of the service reinstatements and complete all of the re-connec- tions into the nearby properties safely.” After this, the final phase of the work to re-open the road, which

closed in November, will involve reconstructing the road surface and reinstating pavements and kerbs. The spokesman added: “For lo- gistical reasons, the order in which we will be reinstating the services has been altered slightly. “However, this has not altered

the timeframe for the works to be complete.”
