Popular play area in need of new surface
PROBLEMS with Bearsted Green playground mean children are unlikely to get access again before the summer holidays.
The Villager ‘Retro’ revival
THE seventh annual Classic Car Show takes place on Bearsted Green on Bank Holiday Monday, May 26.
More than 150 vintage vehicles are expected to be out in all their glory for visitors to browse, be- tween 10am and 6pm, when there will also be vintage-themed stalls and the chance to get your hair and make-up done ‘retro’ style. The day is designed to raise money for the Kent Air Ambulance and, while cars and stallholders pay for the privilege of attending, admission is free for visitors – but donations gladly welcome on the day.
There will be vintage clothes to buy – as well as a car-themed cock- tail tent and other tasty refresh- ments. All that’s needed now is the fine weather!

Fun and games
A BUMPER sports and activity Day, set in motion by community warden Adam McKinley, will offer a host of fun and games for all ages. The event is on August 26 and, if any local or surrounding area sports groups are interested in having a stall, please contact Adam on 07813 712105.
The parish council closed the playground last year, amid fears children could be injured from trip- ping when the surface started to break up. However, having gone out to ten- der for the repairs, the council has learned the base is in a worse state than originally feared.
It now transpires the sub-base for the playground is unsatisfactory, requiring the whole section to be re-visited, and re-laid. Contractors have been asked to re-tender for the job, to take ac- count of the additional informa- tion. Parish council chair Cllr Richard Ash said: “The original plan for a new ‘wet pour’ on the top is clearly not going to be suitable in the light of what we now know. It’s like dis- covering your house is not built on proper foundations.”
The council had hoped repairs

Green poised for party time
BEARSTED is proving a popular place for parties. Residents – and those further afield – are taking advantage of the fresh air and fun available free of charge on its picturesque Green. Following a resident’s recent request for a child’s party on the Green, the parish council has now received a request from a Hempstead resident to hold a party for her three-year old. After much deliberation, the council agreed to the request, taking the view that the Green was a public open space and there for the enjoyment of the public. Even if approval were denied, there was nothing to stop any- one using the Green, members agreed. However, there would be a cricket match on the Green on the day in ques- tion, so the council said they would write to the applicant and point this out.
Lights still target for vandals
MINDLESS vandals continue to cost the people of Bearsted their hard-earned money.
New lights installed in Church Landway, to replace those that had been repeatedly targeted by van- dals, have also come under attack, with three or four broken fittings. The route is used by many peo- ple as a crossing from the church and the east end of the village to Ashford Road and the lights were considered a useful addition to the floodlighting at the tennis and the bowling clubs. However, the parish council is facing yet another repair bill as a re-

sult of this latest vandal attack. The council is looking at carrying out the repairs and will also be is- suing tender documents for re-sur- facing work at the Church Landway and the church car park. Parish council chairman Richard Ash said: “At a time when people are complaining about increasing costs – including the parish precept – we could well do without this kind of drain on our resources. “The lights were installed for the benefit of the community. It is a pity that a few mindless people see fit to wreck them time and time again.”
mean further delays are inevitable. Cllr Ash said: “We are still hope- ful that the job can be completed in time for the peak summer period.”
Playscheme places
PARENTS wanting to take advantage of the Bearsted Summer Playscheme are being urged to get their applica- tions in early.
The playscheme, for children aged up to 11, is always hugely popular and bookings are now being taken.
The scheme will run for two
weeks in July and August, provid- ing children with ample opportu- nities to put their creative talents to test – and to make new friends in a safe, supervised environment. For more details and an applica- tion form, contact the parish office on the details provided below.
Pump house roof
THE council is currently considering quotes from Maidstone Borough Council for the cost of repairing the roof on the Pump House, on Bearsted Green. A number of tiles blew off the roof during the bad winter weather, which are now being stored by the landlord of the nearby White Horse pub. The Pump House is just one of
several items of historical interest around the village green and the council hope repairs will be con- cluded soon.
