Finished. Spring has sprung in the
Ozarks. And for a guy that picked up and left the white beaches in Pensacola for this extraordinarily out-of-the- ordinary Ozarks white winter ... well, let’s just saymomma is much happier at home now. And, of all things, to kick
off this first Mountain Home spring for the Heists, I’m now a “duck dad.” Long story short ... We have a beautiful pond
behind the house that really caught our attention when wild ducks visited during the winter. You name it, we seemed to have it, identifying
her heart, said, “Let’s get ducks.”Hmm... And here we are, proud “parents” of three White Pekin and three Mallards. Bought them at one-day old and have had a blast taking them from peepers in a box, to swimming in a kid’s pool, to the “home” that will be- come their night haven from predators. Heck, here’s how bad the attachment has gotten: We have a good-sized deck to float on the pond with a dog house attached for the ducks during the day. So we’re having fun with
the new additions, and over- joyed that winter is gone. But, I’m going to be honest, there were more than a few times over the past couple
months when I looked out the back porch and thought, “What have you done?” And I’m sure in the com-
ing months, as Cat and I con- tinue to explore our back- yard in the Ozarks, we’ll think more than a few times, “This is why.” So enjoy this issue of Liv-
ing Well. It’s about spring, interesting people (trail run- ner Jake Anderson, artist Jeanne Louise Chauffe) and cool things to see (new ASUMHart gallery) and do (annual Art Odyssey Tour, Easter dinner along the White River at PJ’s River Run Restaurant). And, of course, the seasonal scenes of the Ozarks by Kevin Piep- er are spectacular, as always. So TGIF, folks. But, you must excuse me.

I’m pretty sure I hear the “kids” calling.
