[EDITOR’S NOTE] Upcoming Events
Days after bringing his second child (me) from the hospital and putting a down payment on a new home, my dad lost his job. It was a diffi cult situation to say the least – one without a safety net. So with a truckload of wire, he started Cumberland Sales Company. T ere wasn’t any formality to his business, or celebratory kick-off - just a man, and a truck, trying to make a living (Cue the country music and the Budweiser commercial). Many rigging houses have similar stories of how they began.
Ask any company that’s been doing business in this industry for some time now and there’s a tale to tell. Take, for instance, Peter Hansen as he recalls how his grandfather, Joseph R. Tway started what is now today Tway Lifting Products. Find the story on page 16 of this issue. History off ers not just experience, but appreciation. I’ve been a part of the family business, and now on my own, for ten years and have gained a strong appreciation for our work that seems to grow with each year. On my daily drive, I notice construction projects most others would not, and all the
products involved from the job to manufacturer. I’m especially proud when my daughter points out a big crane with a large emphasis on “big.” She knows her granddaddy sells the wire rope; however, she also often asks if he is on top of the crane because how else does he get the wire that high? It’s these simple details that make me laugh and feel proud at the same time. At the recent CONEXPO-CONAGG, I had an opportunity, along with 130,000 other attendees, to see our work showcased from every facet of our industry. Every single product and equipment imaginable within the construction industry was there. My son would have had a fi eld day to see all of his “toys” life-size. I spent three days walking the show, visiting exhibiting friends from around the globe. During the show, I sat down with Craig Rifkin from Chant Engineering and Bill Adams of
Premier Wire Rope. Bill explained the new Teufelberger Evolution P9 rope. His understanding of the product was expansive, and the detail involved was amazing - not just because of this new high performance boom hoist rope, but also Teufelberger’s system of research and testing. What continues to impress me with our work is that while we don’t get the fanfare from some of these amazingly cool projects and jobs, we are the details that ensure the safety and the strength behind them – we are the backbone. In this issue, we highlight the Shanghai Tower, which has been dubbed the new age
of the Vertical City. T e Tower is the tallest in China and second tallest in the world, an extremely interesting concept for urban development. However, when new projects test limits, it’s our job to fi nd more ways to take our products the distance, and in this case… that direction is up. While appreciating details isn’t always a luxury in today’s world, take a second on your daily commute to see what’s changing in your neighborhood, your city, and your region - you might just see your work a part of something pretty awe-inspiring, and that’s pretty cool. If you have news or announcements from your business, please let me know – we look
forward to sharing your work! Best,
