News Doubt over park and ride site

THE future of the park and ride site in Sittingbourne Road may be in doubt after its landlord sug- gested Maidstone Council was not committed to the project. The council’s lease for the 600-

space car park at Eclipse Park, near M20 Junction 7, expires in Novem- ber and Gallagher Group, the land- lord, said it would not renew the existing rolling agreement. The lease was renewed for a fur-

Plans refused A PROPOSED two-storey side ex- tension at 4 Sandling Lane, Penen- den Heath was refused by Maidstone Council. The plan also included a rear ex- tension and loft conversion. The council said the side exten-

sion had an “unsympathetic de- sign” and the roof extensionwould have harmed the amenity of the residents at 6 Sandling Lane.

Classes agreed

PLANNING permission was granted for a three-storey class- room block at Invicta Grammar School in Vinters Park. The block will include two science rooms and a classroom.

ther year last autumn. The council’s draft local plan designates the land as a continuing park-and-ride site. However, Nick Yandle, chief ex-

ecutive of the Gallagher Group, said: “Maidstone Council has not yet decided whether it wants to stay there. “In its integrated transport strat-

egy, it says it is not a best solution. It doesn’t seem to have taken into account how much it will cost to be

available.

“Maidstone Council has not yet decided what it wants, and if it wants to stay we have to get into a discussion on terms. It boils down to commercial terms. If people are prepared to pay enough they can have it.” Part of the site has planning per- mission for a hotel, which is still to be constructed. When it is built, Gallagherwould be obliged to find

parking for users of the park and ride service in Eclipse Park. Downs Mail understands that the council has other sites in mind for the service, should no agreement be reached. A spokesman for Maidstone Council said: “We are negotiating an extension to the current agree- ment and are confident that there will not be any interruption to the service.”

Bowling night thanks to young helpers

A RIVERSIDE Rotary Club tradition was extended this year when young people from Invicta Grammar School’s Interact Club joined the club from Maidstone Grammar School and the Crossroads Young Carers for an evening of bowling. Rotarian GeoffWood, who organ-

ised the event at the Hollywood Bowl in Maidstone and has been the mentor for the Interact Club in Maidstone for several years, said: “This annual event is a great oppor- tunity for our Rotary Club to say a practical thank you and well done to our young people for all of the work they do for charity, including the help they give usmanning the gates at the county show. “It is also in appreciation for the dedicated help the young carers give their disabled family members on a reg- ular basis. We applaud the work that all these young people do.”

We are working to #FindandfixKent

Kent County Council is investing an additional £3 million to repair damage to Kent’s roads and we have crews out there tackling potholes, broken manhole covers, flood damage and fallen trees following the winter storms and exceptional rainfall.

Potholes are a common problem for the highway across the country, and especially during and after the winter months. Our crews are out there identifying and fixing them as fast as they can, so please bear with them.

We do understand that potholes are a frustration for road users, and we are doing all we can to fix them as quickly as possible.

We also need your help in identifying potholes so please go online and let us know about them.
