tribute to Zoe THE parents of Zoe Georgiou – the Maidstone schoolgirl killed by a car as shewalked along a road in Cox- heath – have attended an emotional tribute to their daughter by class- mates. As well as celebrating the life of

News Friends pay Road repair continues

KCC SAYS it has been working around the clock to get the road through Leeds re-opened – but, ac- cording to the parish council, it could still take until the summer. Katie Lewis, KCC’s drainage and

the 16-year-old student, the special RAG Talent Show at Invicta Gram- mar School raised more than £1,700 for the Multiple Sclerosis Society, a charity close to Zoe’s heart. A spokesman for the school, in Huntsman Lane,Vinters Park, said: “The focus was a celebration of Zoe’s life and the special perform- ances made by her closest friends, whilst tinged with sadness, were beautifully performed. “Itwas lovely to see Zoe’s family

at the event, and we plan to con- tinue to celebrate Zoe’s life through future activities at the school.” Acts included piano pieces, singing, dancing and even some kung fu. Money raised by the event will

fund research into multiple sclero- sis, of which Zoe’s mum is a suf- ferer. Zoe died after being hit by a car

as she walked along Heath Road with her boyfriend at 6pm on Janu- ary 11.

flood manager, said work to re- build the road was progressing after huge holes were found under the tarmac in Upper Street in No- vember. She said:“We have beenworking

seven days a week since before Christmas to fill the voids and sta-

bilise the surrounding ground. “This work is now complete and

we are preparing the site so the util- ity services can be reinstated and the road reconstructed.“ However, villagers have learned

the re-opening will coincide with roadworks inWillington Street. KCC member Gary Cooke said:

“This has to be the case due to the fact thatWillington Street acts as a diversion for the B2163 while this remains closed. It does not follow that the reversewould be true.

Badger Chloe’s pride at award

A NINE-year-old from Maidstone is St John Ambulance’s District Badger of the Year. Chloe Chapman, from Wyatt Street, was

one of five Badgers competing in a close-run contest for the title covering Kent and East Sussex. The East Borough Primary School pupil,

who joined the Maidstone Sett just over two years ago, said: “Iamso happy to win badger of the year. I had a good day in the competi- tion and enjoyed working with the other Badgers.” Unit manager Daniel Burke said Chloewas

a perfect role model, particularly for new- comers: “We’re delighted she has been cho- sen as District Badger of the Year.”

“I can confirm that KCC would

not consider the B2163 through Leeds as an appropriate diversion route as Willington Street is the designated lorry route and there is aweight restriction on the B2163.” Cllr Cooke said KCC would be looking at phasing the work in Willington Street. In the meantime, the parish council is pressing ahead with its plan to enforce the village weight limit on lorries by advertis- ing for two voluntary police con- stables, which it will pay to train.

Salon to stay A HAIRDRESSING salon is to re- main in Shepway after a proposal to convert the building into a hot food takeaway was refused. Aplanning application had been submitted for the takeaway to move in to 4 Cumberland Avenue and replace Step One, whichwas to close due to retirement. However, the applicant has now

pulled out after Maidstone Council said the change of use would have caused late night noise and disrup- tion to nearby residents. Carlos Ramos, leaseholder of the building, said: “The salon will stay here for many years to come.”
