MARYBEL BATJER Secretary, California Government Operations Agency Marybel Batjer is Secretary of the California Government Operations Agency (CalGovO-


ps). She was appointed to the post by Governor Edmund G. Brown, Jr. in June 2013 to serve as the first-ever Secretary of CalGovOps. The agency was established as part of Brown’s comprehensive overhaul of state government and is respon- sible for administering state operations including procurement, real estate, information technology, and human resources. Sec- retary Batjer’s public service career includes senior leadership posts in the executive branches of two state governments, as well as key advisory roles in two U.S. presidential administra- tions and at the Pentagon. Prior to her appointment as CalGo- vOps Secretary, she was vice president of public policy and corporate social responsibility for Caesars Entertainment, Inc., the world’s largest gaming-entertainment company. From 2003 to 2005, she was Cabinet Secretary to the Governor of the State of California, where she served as chief policy advisor to Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger and directed the activities of the governor’s 13 cabinet secretaries. She has also served as Undersecretary of the California Business, Transportation and Housing Agency and as Chief Deputy Director of the California Department of Fair Employment and Housing.


KEYNOTE SPEAKERS ANNE SIMPSON Senior Portfolio Manager, Director of Global Governance, CalPERS Anne Simpson is the Senior Portfolio Man- ager, Investments and Director of Global Gov- ernance at CalPERS. It is the largest public


pension system in the United States with approximately $282 billion in global assets. The governance program includes CalPERS Focus List of shareholder engagement with compa- nies, global proxy voting, legal and regulatory reform agenda and CalPERS actively managed corporate governance invest- ment strategy. She is leading CalPERS sustainability project to integrate environmental, social, and governance (ESG)


across the total fund. Anne is an advisory board member at the Ira Millstein Center for Global Markets and Corporate Ownership, Columbia Law School. She is a Director of the Council of Institutional Investors and is a member of the Inves- tor Advisory Group of the Public Company Accounting Over- sight Board. She is a member of the RFK Leadership Council. Anne sits on the Editorial Advisory Board for the journal “Cor- porate Governance: An International Review” published by Blackwells. She is also the co-author of “Fair Shares: The Fu- ture of Shareholder Power and Responsibility,” published by Oxford University Press. Her former roles include: Executive Director of the International Corporate Governance Network, head of the World Bank-OECD Global Corporate Governance Forum, Joint Managing Director of Pensions and Investment Research Consultants, Ltd., and Senior Faculty Fellow, Yale School of Management.


WADE CROWFOOT Deputy Cabinet Secretary, Senior Advisor, Office of Governor, Edmund G. Brown, Jr. Wade Crowfoot serves as Deputy Cabinet Secretary and Senior Advisor to Governor Brown. He joined the Brown administration in


May 2011. His portfolio includes transportation, infrastructure, military and veterans issues. Recently, he has led an effort to expand zero-emission vehicles in California and build international partnerships with China and other countries to fight climate change. Also, as the Governor’s Military Advisor, Wade works to strengthen California’s support for federal military bases located in the state. Prior to joining Governor Brown’s Administration, Wade served as Regional Director for the Environmental Defense Fund (EDF). In that role, he helped to lead EDF’s 40 western regional staff and worked with leaders throughout California to implement key climate, water and oceans policy. Wade has also served as senior environ- mental advisor to San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom. In the Mayor’s Office, Wade developed energy, transportation and waste policies and managed the Mayor’s state and federal environmental agendas. He has held policy positions for other elected officials and worked in the fields of public opinion research and urban economic development.
