Anger at MP’s support for J8 business park

LOCAL MP Helen Grant (pic- tured) has incensed campaigners opposed to the ‘industrialisation’ of farmland off the M20 at junc- tion 8 by publicly supporting plans for a business park. The proposed Waterside Busi-

ness Park, near Hollingbourne, falls outside Mrs Grant’s constituency of Maidstone and the Weald, but she wrote to Maidstone Council’s head of planning Rob Jarman to reiterate her support for the plans, which, it

is said, would allowMarden-based Scarab andADLto relocate. Both of these companies operate in her con- stituency. She told Downs

Mail: “I do appreci- ate the concerns raised. However, I also believe that it is essential to sup-

port local businesses. “There is a real danger that if

barred from expanding, both ADL and Scarab Sweepers could relocate out of the region entirely, causing massive job losses and considerable damage to the local and regional economy.” The area’s constituency MP is

Hugh Robertson, also a Conserva- tive, who sent a recorded message opposing the development to a re- cent protest meeting at Mercure Great Danes hotel, attended by 300 residents.

Grants for youth sports projects

CLUBS and associations in Maid- stone supporting sport for young people are being invited to apply for the annual Stanley Blow and Ole KverndalAwards. The awards, presented by the

Kent County Playing Fields Associ- ation in memory of two past mem- bers, are worth up to £300 each to provide sporting opportunities for youngsters aged from 10 to 16. Blow and Kverndal were instru- mental in introducing many play-

ing fields and other sporting initia- tives over a period of 20 years. The fund enables the association

to make grants each year in support of fresh initiatives by clubs and other voluntary organisations. Examples of projects that would qualify for a grant include the for- mation of sports clubs for young people, providing skills courses for youngsters and organising courses for coaches and other officials that will ultimately benefit youngsters.

There is no restriction on the sports that will qualify. A grant of up to £300 will be

made towards each successful scheme and the next round of awards will be announced in May/June 2014. Last year, 11 applicants received

awards ranging from £240 to £300 each, totalling £3,223. To apply call 01622 753960 or e-

mail The closing date is March 27. Fire service

plan refused KENT Fire & Rescue Service’s ap- plication to add another 40 parking spaces to an existing overflow car park at The Godlands, Straw Mill Hill, Tovil, has been refused. Maidstone Council’s decision no-

tice said: “The enlarged car park with Tarmac surfacing, parked ve- hicles, lighting and other parapher- nalia would have a significant negative impact on the character of the LooseValley Conservation Area …and the wider countryside.” The fire service said the extended parking area was to cater for in- creased demand and would have been used by employees and visi- tors.

Stadium work

MAIDSTONE United has been given retrospective planning per- mission to undertake improve- ments at Gallagher Stadium in James WhatmanWay, Maidstone. Maidstone Council gave the go-

ahead for the creation of 41 extra seats to the south of the east stand; a single storey extension of the cov- ered terrace; two detached single storey buildings for use as a club shop and bar; excavation work, new retainingwalls and paving for a portable toilet block.
