Have a Holly Jolly Christmas It’s the best time of the year I don’t know if there’ll be snow
But have a cup of cheer Have a Holly Jolly Christmas And when you walk down the street Say hello to friends you know And everyone you meet
When you hear this song many different
emotions pass through your mind. Joy, excite- ment, elation, nostalgia, disgust, frustration, depression just to name a few. Many people are frustrated to think the Christmas season is now upon us. The hustle and bustle of rushing to the mall to find the perfect gift, the most amazing sur- prise for that special person or people in their lives. They find this glorious season stressful and I can understand why. We are trained by modern media to focus on
the best gifts, the most important holiday meals, having the perfect centrepiece for our table, a beautiful Christmas tree. Every year there are
new gadgets that we are trained to want, the new iPad air, the newest computer, a new iPhone 5s. Or maybe you need a new Bench sweater, Lulule- mon pants, or a new pair of Sketchers shoes. Even though we likely have a perfectly good com- puter, our cell phone works well and our last sweater is still barely worn, we still want more. This commerciality has changed Christmas from the one we knew as children to what we see today. Gone is the popcorn stringed garland and home- made ornaments replaced by bling and glitter commercially made. We have to either learn to live in this commercial Christmas or decide to change and make Christmas our own. Whether it is lack of time, money, weather or
inspiration we all have stress associated with this season. There are times that we need to step back and look at what is really important. What is the meaning of Christmas? The true meaning of Christmas is different for each and every person. If you enjoy the commercial Christmas then go ahead; have a great time. For me Christmas will always be different. Christmas is a time spent with family and friends, meals with relatives, lov- ing the fellowship that coming together brings. Now I’m not saying I don’t look forward to
receiving presents, I do. But more than that I look forward to the joy and elation I will see on the faces of my nephews as they receive the gifts I have carefully chosen for them. They won’t be the most expensive new gadgets, they will be carefully thought out presents that they need and express the emotions that I want to show them. I love sitting late in the evening just watching
the twinkling lights on my Christmas tree or stop- ping at the local church to see the nativity scene set up on the front lawn. The magic of watching the community come together for the Santa Claus Parade collecting food donations for the food bank, young children at the doors of local busi- nesses collecting presents for the underprivileged kids, singing carols at my local church on Christ- mas Eve. This is the Christmas I enjoy. Each person has to decide what Christmas means to them and how to go about making it the best Christmas they can. Try saying hello to not only your friends but also brightening the day of a stranger by wishing them a Merry Christmas! From the executive of the Western Horse Associa- tion have a wonderful Christmas and a Happy New Year!
