Shire Pharmaceuticals, whose UK headquarters are at Basingstoke, saw its share price rise 7% during a busy January in which it successfully completed the purchase of 79.5% of the shares of the Nasdaq-quoted ViroPharma and merged it with one of its subsidiaries.

It also sold its Dermagraft (living skin substitute) assets to Organogenesis, which could be worth uo to $300m in future payments, and saw Susan Kilsby – chair of the company’s Audit, Compliance & Risk Committee – appointed to take over from retiring non-executive chairman Matthew Emmens.

However, the biggest success stories were with the smaller companies in the region, with Odiham-based Egdon Resources seeing its share price soar over 200%.

The AIM-quoted oil and gas exploration and production business completed the farm-out of its licences in Nottinghamshire and Yorkshire to French oil and gas giant Total. Under the agreement Egdon will have a 14.5% stake in production, exploration and development licences; it also signed an opt-in agreement with Total worth over £900,000 in respect of a development licence in Lincolnshire.

Shares in John Lewis of Hungerford, the bespoke kitchen and furniture manufacturer, continued their upward spiral with another 64% rise. The company’s flagship Fulham showroom, which opened 10 years ago in what was described as a milestone event for the business, has been redesigned to incorporate even more of the latest design collection.

Vic Davies, course leader for BA (Hons) Advertising Management and Digital Communications at Bucks New University

Annual advertising lectures reflect Bucks New University’s industry influence

Buckinghamshire New University is aiming to reflect its growing profile in the advertising industry by hosting an annual lecture from a prominent figure in the sector.

Vic Davies, course leader for BA (Hons) Advertising Management and Digital Communications at the University, said the event showed its increasing standing in the area.

He said: “As an institution Bucks New University is expanding its reputation in the advertising industry.

“The Advertising Industry Lecture provides a platform for senior figures to speak to our students and share their views and opinions. The purpose is to add gravitas to what we do on the Advertising courses and to set us apart.”

Davies and George Boyter, course leader for MA Advertising at Bucks New University, came up with the idea for the Advertising Industry Lecture series.

The first in the series featured Paul Feldwick, a former worldwide planning director for the globally- recognised advertising agency DDB Worldwide, now called adam&eveDDB. Feldwick has worked on a host of famous campaigns for top international brands including Volkswagen and now works as an independent consultant.

He is also a member of the Planning Hall of Fame which was established by the not-for- profit organisation Account Planning Group, and his lecture was on 'Advertising's relationship with its past and prospects for the future'.

Boyter added: “The advertising industry is undergoing fundamental changes with the influence of digital technology, media innovation and data manipulation.

“It’s a good time to take stock and who better to provide a clear- headed view for students than Paul, with his intellect and wealth of experience.

“Paul was able to draw relevant wisdom from the past and show us how this could be applied to the future of advertising. It was a fitting first lecture in the series.”

The Advertising Industry Lecture is organised with Bucks AdSoc, part of a UK-wide student advertising and marketing society. To find out more about Bucks AdSoc and keep up-to-date with news of future lectures go to www.bucksadsoc.co.uk
