Young entrepreneur competition offers vital support

The 2014 Haines Watts Young Entrepreneur of the Year competition has launched and if you – or someone you know – is thinking of entering, you might be interested in the mentoring that’s offered as part of the prize

From talking to previous competition finalists, and to young entrepreneurs generally in their work, Haines Watts’ partners have compiled the top 10 worries they experience and these come up frequently in mentoring sessions:

1 Not sure that the market niche is lucrative enough or that the product fit is right.

2 Cashflow, Cashflow, Cashflow. This single element can fold a business even if it’s profitable.

3 Too much of a perfectionist – either can’t delegate or procrastinates all the time and ends up doing nothing at all.

4 Guilty of working within strengths and comfort zones and

letting other areas lapse – this can be fatal if they are core aspects of the business such as strategy, book- keeping, sales or marketing.

5 ‘Haven’t got time’ syndrome – so busy running the business that you haven’t got a clue about vital aspects like having up-to-date and accurate management information.

6 Not sure if you are charging enough.

7 Feelings of isolation – don’t know who to turn to for advice – and friends are out when you’re stuck working; they don’t understand what it’s like to be a business owner.

8 Don’t know how best to grow the business.

Jermy achieved fourth place in the 200m backstroke and 400m individual medley finals and eighth place in the 50m backstroke final.

Jermy said: ”Before leaving for the competition I received a letter from his Royal Highness

the Duke of Cambridge wishing the team good luck, and I was lucky enough to take part in the parade at the opening ceremony.

"The whole experience was just incredible – swimming in an open-air pool in 35 degree heat along with wind and rain was a completely different scenario to my training and it was such a great experience.

"I’d like to thank my family and friends for their support, as well as a special thanks to my swimming coach Graham Pople at Havant and Waterlooville Swimming Club and local accountancy firm Wilkins Kennedy for their
