This year’s awards now ready for lift-off

Sponsors have been confirmed for this year’s Women in Business awards, presented by The Business Magazine. Following the success of last year’s launch of WiB, Barclays, Deloitte and law firm Blake Lapthorn have renewed their support of the awards for 2014. They are joined this year by recruitment specialist GCS

Planning is now underway for this year’s competition, with the awards night scheduled for September 11 at Oakley Hall, near Basingstoke.

The official launch will be at the same venue in June and entries will close on July 31. Judges will then meet in August to draw up shortlists in each category.

The awards night will be one of the highlights of the business calendar in the south. The high-profile dinner will be attended by many of the top businesswomen from throughout the region. Special guest speaker will be Dame Stephanie Shirley (pictured), an inspirational IT entrepreneur, and rated as one of the 100 Most Powerful Women in Britain.

Aged 80, Dame Stephanie, born in Germany, arrived in Britain as a five-year- old unaccompanied Kindertransport refugee in 1939. Placed with foster parents, she founded a software company, FI Group, in 1962, predominantly employing women.

As a wealthy entrepreneur, she is estimated to have given away at least £65 million of her estimated £150m, and she supports a range of causes, including autism research, a cause she was drawn to through her late son Giles, who was severely autistic.

“There’s only so much you can spend, and money that isn’t working has an obscenity about it,“ she said.

Demand for tickets for the Women in Business finals is expected to be high.
