DEVOTED church members have been honoured with long service awards from the Bishop of Gloucester. The inaugural awards were presented to key players in Gloucestershire’s church com- munity in a packed service in Gloucester Cathedral on Satur- day, February 8. The 23 recipients, honoured

for their dedication to the dio- cese, parishes, chaplaincies and church schools, will now be known as the Company of St Kyneburga. Bishop of Gloucester, the Right

Revd Michael Perham, said: “The Company of St Kyneburga is a group of people who have served the Diocese of Gloucester with distinction in a way that

many wish to honour. Members of the company, having been nominated by others, are admit- ted to the company by me.” Graham Smith, of Wotton- under-Edge, was recognised for his work in retirement as chair- man of the Diocesan Board of Finance, as a member of the Bishop’s Council, of the Inter- Diocesan Finance Forum and the General Synod. Locally the former bursar

of Katharine Lady Berkeley’s School is active in his parish and was the first lay chairman of the newly created Wotton Deanery. Mary Davies, who has lived in

Hawkesbury Upton for over 30 years, was welcomed into the company for her commitment to church duties during these

BUSINESSES across

Gloucestershire are being urged to support the cam- paign to secure vital fund- ing for a project that would see a notoriously dangerous stretch of the A417 improved. The county’s local enter- prise partnership, GFirst, is calling on organisations from all over the county to come together to convince the government to provide £250 million to fund the A417 loop, a project that would re- move the treacherous single carriageway between Nettle- ton Bottom and Birdlip. Used by more than 34,000

vehicles every day, the five kilometre road has become synonymous with bottleneck delays, congestion and fatal accidents. The accident rate on the “missing link” is twice that of the entire dual carriage- way, with a serious crash happening, on average, every

two weeks. There have been 11 fatalities on the road in the last 16 years, three of which occurred in the space of eight hours. Dr Diane Savory, chairman

of GFirst, said that the A417 is currently a burden to the economic welfare of every- body living in the county. “It is imperative that we improve transport links within the county for busi- ness expansion and to help people have better access to jobs and services, as well as improving overall road safe- ty,” she said. “Unless a solution is found, congestion and long delays at the ‘missing link’ can only get worse with increased vol- umes of traffic.” Local businesses, residents

and commuters are being asked to show their support for the A417 loop by signing the pledge atwww.a417 missinglink.co.uk

years. Twice serving as a church warden, she has also been a standard bearer for the British Legion since 1998 and regularly organises charity lunches and meals on wheels. Her incumbent described her

as being a very valuable part of the church’s life in Hawkesbury. Awards were also presented to Cirencester-based Jim Harris, who has previously served min- istry in Cam and Stinchcombe, and former bishop’s visitor to church schools in the Hawkes- bury andWotton deanery, Alison Shaw. The group is named after

Kyneburga, co-foundress and ab- bess of the first religious com- munity at what is now Glouces- ter Cathedral.
