AS our population grows old- er, which jobs will grow? Our ageing population brings economic challenges for the country. But what job opportunities might this bring?

Health and social care The obvious growth area

for jobs is in health and so- cial care services. These jobs could be in hospitals, clin- ics, residential care homes and services in the home. But it’s not just traditional healthcare roles that might be in greater demand – for example, there could be more openings for music and art therapists to help Alzhei- mer’s patients, and occu- pational therapists to help patients cope with physical conditions and to live inde- pendently.

Technology On the subject of living independently,

technology

will have a big part to play in helping older people cope with common long-term con- ditions such as heart failure, stroke, diabetes and demen-

tia. ‘Assistive technology’ can help people stay in their own homes and out of hospi- tal. This technology can be simple aids and adaptations such as ramps, hand-rails, grab bars, stair lifts and wheelchairs. But it can also include ‘telecare’ devices that can detect whether the patient has had a fall, or to check if they’re looking af- ter themselves by using their home appliances in their usual way.

Other areas that could see growth are: lFinancial planning – help- ing people make their retire- ment income go further Health and fitness – train- ers that specialise in helping people enjoy an active and healthy old age could be in demand l'Transition advice’ – from coaches advising on moving from work to retirement, to property professionals help- ing with moving to a differ- ent type of accommodation lLeisure and recreation – as people stay healthy for long- er, physical activities such as

yoga, walking and golf are increasingly popular.

Benefits of keeping older people in mind There is also evidence that many businesses and servic- es could do much more to meet the needs of older peo- ple. For example, many train stations could benefit from upgrades to help people with mobility impairments. And in the hospitality industry, simple adjustments like easi- er access to get in and around buildings and more targeted promotional deals with older people in mind could harness the spending power of older people.
