The cost of X-ray screening technology has come down considerably in the past few years, says scanning equipment manufacturer Rapiscan vice president of sales for Europe, Frederic Brouiller, but it remains to be seen whether it will reduce still further. Scanners are now affordable enough to be considered by quite smaller freight forwarders, who see the capital cost as worthwhile in terms of saving the cost and uncertainty
of using ‘public’
facilities, but more importantly improving service to their own customers.
Issue 1 2014 - FBJ Affordable X-rays In theory, a still bigger market
could bring prices down yet further; on the other hand, new regulations and requirements could start to push the cost of equipment up again. Last year, the market benefited
from an influx of nearly new equipment from the London Olympics – however, most of the large ‘tunnel’ equipment suitable for cargo use has now been sold. But it is always worthwhile looking out for other major public events – such as the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow this year – in case more competitively priced equipment comes on the market.
TRANSPORT SECURITY EXPO 2014
Next year’s Transport Security Expo will take place on the slightly date of 2-3 December, 2014. The event is also moving to Olympia’s National Hall – a much larger venue.
A plenary and centrepiece conference incorporating the aviation, maritime, supply chain and public transportation industries, will form the focal point. As before, it will be supported by an extensive exhibition, industry-leading knowledge centric workshops, private briefings and a VIP programme.
Further changes and new features will be announced as planning for next year’s event gets under way in earnest early in the new year. This year’s event saw over 100 exhibitors display hardware and soſtware to almost four thousand attendees, says Peter Jones, chief executive of the organisers, Nineteen Events.

New mobile scanner from Rapiscan
Screening equipment specialist Rapiscan Systems is offering a trailer mounted, drive through, high energy X-ray cargo inspection system for rapid deployment at ports, border crossings and checkpoints. The T60 helps detect contraband and threats such as explosives, weapons or narcotics in cargo. It incorporates Rapiscan’s 6 MeV X-ray imaging technology and has two portal scan modes, a high energy scan, where only cargo is scanned as it moves through the inspection tunnel at 3-8km/h, or,
with the optional CabScan mode, a low energy, low dose X-ray source is used to scan the drivers cab, switching automatically to a high energy source aſter the cab area has moved through the 5.1m high inspection boom. Rapiscan says that the unit can
be used in all weather conditions, being towed to an inspection site so that vehicles can be scanned as they drive through the boom, whilst up to four on-board operators can review the scanned X-ray images in the inspection office.
