[EDITOR’S NOTE]

Politics aside, the lane closure scandal that erupted in January on the GW Bridge between NYC and Fort Lee, New Jersey, reminded us of one thing that we often take for granted – how dependent we are on our infrastructure systems. When something as seemingly small as shutting down toll booths for the day on the main artery of a bridge happens, a crippling scenario immediately aff ects the daily commute home – but the repercussions go way beyond the local logjam. T e ripples

extend for days and weeks later in locations across the country that depend on the effi cient movement along these systems for commerce. Like it or not, our globalized economy means that ‘local’ just got a lot larger. In this issue of Wire Rope Exchange, we look ahead at large projects around the globe that are focused on smart growth and development – connecting not just local communities, but paving the way for future commerce in these critical areas. T e Ambassador Bridge accounts for nearly one-quarter of all trade traffi c between Canada and the U.S. We look at how the new International Trade Crossing will provide for much needed relief and more effi cient trade traffi c across this vital connection. Likewise, we feature the proposed construction of the Grand Inga Dam on the Congo River in Africa. T e dam will generate signifi cantly more power than the T ree Gorges Dam, currently the world’s largest producer of hydroelectric energy, and will provide the infrastructure needed to revitalize an entire continent. Finally, we start this fi rst issue of 2014 with a highlight of events and expos you don’t want to miss. With a lineup that features an emphasis on everything from innovative new products and techniques to continuing education seminars that stress the importance of safety and quality, the importance of staying connected has never been so necessary. At the Wire Rope Exchange, we encourage you to stay connected with us and take advantage of our one-of-a-kind marketplace that is connecting more buyers with more sellers, year over year. If you have news or announcements from your business, please let me know – we look forward to sharing your news!
