The rat race of the summer is thank- fully over and the catch up mode begins. However, every year I seem to lose ground no matter how good my intentions are since something always comes up. The end of September I happened to be in New Bedford for the family Thanksgiving and visited the Working Waterfront Festival. There were a number of interesting booths on the docks and a number of boats open to the public. There was quite a crowd everyday and the biggest draw seemed to be the food tent where the line looked like a 15 to 30 minute wait. I grew up two towns to the east, but my grandparents had a home on the Fairhaven shore when I was a kid and it brings back great memories. I will always remember the Maine-built eastern rigged draggers as they went in and out of port and today they are gone. I am worried that little is being done to document this aspect of the fi shing industry from say the 1930s to today. Hope- fully someone is documenting this so future generations will know how it all evolved. Three days later it was back to Boston for a stay at the Prudential Centre. Ann had a cardiac conference at the Sheraton so during the day I worked on the racing histories for lobster boats from 1999 to present. Wander- ing around the Prudential Centre shops was good for an hour and that was mostly in a bookstore, however one day I wandered over the Boston Public Library. I headed right up to the microfi lm room to read the “Alta California” from 1849. Do not fall asleep from the excitement, because what a treasure trove of maritime history. I no longer copy out the pages with the wanted information, instead I use my cell-phone and take a pho-

tograph. Save those trees and the space in my fi le cabinets. With the two screens set up in my offi ce it works perfectly, I put the photograph on one and type, really read it into Dragon, into the other screen. It takes a lot of time to transcribe, but in the end it is invaluable.

I also should add that all three nights I ate at Legal Seafoods and all three nights I had oysters (none available from Maine so settled for the ones from PEI), swordfi sh and squash and sorbet for dessert. I would go back just for this and reading the old newspapers.

The next few weekends, and until it gets too cold to work outside, I need to work on the house and yard, which has been neglected way too long. I enjoy doing this but am easily side tracked, like a good book or transcribing marine articles into the computer.

Over the last couple of weeks I have been working on creating an index of the articles published in Maine Coastal News for the last 26 years. I am not sure how many there are, several hundred, or how many pages, between 5,000 and 10,000, but reading through them has been eye opening. Some bring back fond memories and others the harsh reality of life. What surprised me were the ones that I had no recollection of at all. My goal is to index every article and then transcribe the ones that are not computerized with the ultimate goal of putting them on the website. I am hoping to make a lot of changes to the website over the winter, but it is going to take a vast amount of time to do and that means there goes my intentions of catching up on the oth er neglected projects.
