November 2013 MAINE COASTAL NEWS Page 15. Boat And Ship Yard News waiting to be laid up. They just launched a Wesmac 46,

which was fi nished out as a tuna boat for a customer from Long Island, New York. She is powered with a C18, 1150 hp Caterpillar diesel, which pushed her along at 33 knots and cruised at 25 knots comfortably. Down below she has a V-berth, two bunks on the port side, and a head and shower to star- board. Up in the shelter the galley is to port with a dinette to starboard, which can turn into a berth. Another Wesmac 46 is nearing comple- tion and will be launched midwinter. She is also fi nished off as a tuna boat and will be heading to North Carolina. For accommo- dation she has a V-berth, head and shower with the galley down. Up in the shelter she has helm seat, two settees and all the fi shing gear one would ever want. She is powered with an 815 hp Iveco diesel.

They have just created what they call the “Superwide 46.” Instead of being 14 feet 6 inches in width they have widened her to 17 feet. This one is being laid up and will have her engine installed, a 750 hp Iveco, before being shipped to Lash Brothers Boat Yard in Friendship.

Another 46 foot tuna boat will be head-

ing to New York City. She is about 75 percent complete and will be done later this winter. She is powered with a C15 853 hp Cater- pillar. For accommodations she has a queen berth forward, two berths two port, head and shower to starboard, with the galley up. They have two other 46s, which are

being fi nished out as sportfi shing boats. One will be going to Maryland and the other to New Jersey and both are just being started.

Hewes & Co. of Blue Hill has been

busy, but some of the boat orders have slowed due to the government shutdown. They are currently cutting out all of the pieces for a 35 footer that is underway at Doug Hyland’s shop in Brooklin. Another boat they are working on is the 49 footer now under construction at Brook- lin Boat Yard in Brooklin. They have cut out all of the bulkheads, which have already been delivered.

They are also doing some pieces for

Hodgdon Yachts in East Boothbay, which were of Corian. A Heritage 23, which is a plywood lap- strake boat, is sitting on the fl oor waiting to be shipped to Michigan.

They have a Marine deck they are cut-

ting for Kenway in Augusta. This is for one of their Southport models.

Hewes builds the framing for a stand up paddle board and have sold 25 of them through the Timeless Surf Company. All of these orders come through the Internet. The other side of the company is pres- ently working on some house framing.

Classic Boat in Bernard has a busy winter ahead of them. Like all yards they have presently hauling boats out of the water and getting them ready for the winter. All of their storage buildings are full and several people are talking about major projects. The Newport Boat Show in Newport Rhode Island last September helped with orders of their Pisces. Presently they have fi ve of these to build this winter. They will be started in November and all will be delivered next spring.

One of the major projects this winter is on a Leigh 30, which was sold by their brokerage division last spring. She was for- mally named MOON SHADOW owned in the Great Lakes and is now called SOLACE. She will be getting new paint and varnish, a propane system and electronics. This will be completed next spring.

The brokerage department also just sold a Somes Sound 26, which sported a house to a customer from Seal Harbor.

News From Away Gloucester Marine Railway in

Gloucester, Massachusetts has been busy this summer and fall. Most of the work has been normal maintenance on a variety of vessels. Just launched was the schooner ROSEWAY. She was in for a Coast Guard inspection which meant they had to remove her masts. With this came some rigging and small metal work as well as her annual m aintenance.
