An ‘Olympic’ commitment to a greener steel industry

B

arrett Steel made an ‘Olympic’-sized commitment to reducing its carbon

emissions and making its operations amongst the greenest in the steel industry, when it installed a large commercial solar PV (photovoltaic) system* at its headquarters in Bradford. The installation, one of the biggest roof top systems in Yorkshire, was installed by  renewable energy company. James Barrett, Managing Director comments: “The solar PV project, which covers 1240m² of roof space (almost exactly the area of an Olympic swimming pool), is part of our nationwide Environmental Improvement

energy security and carbon savings. The company is helping to lead the way in making the steel industry greener.”

Strategy. 728 solar panels will provide the site with clean electricity for decades, saving approximately 80,000 kg of CO² annually and resulting in the excess generation of electricity being fed back in to the national grid.

Exol keen on lean manufacturing with visit to JLR

Rob Samuelson, Commercial Director of Energy Jump, said: “We are delighted to have installed the system for Barrett. The company is demonstrating its clear  PV system, including cost saving,

The group is also working towards Group wide accreditation for the environmental standard, ISO 14001:2004, following the award in October 2012 to Barrett Steel Services Bradford. As part of the process they have already implemented initiatives to reduce electricity, water and fuel consumption, optimise raw material use and become more  processes.

to use lean manufacturing to increase its productivity. After the successful implementation of lean manufacturing, Jaguar has become one of the world’s leading car brands. Exol Lubricants operates the same lean production processes. It operates a Kanban scheduling system for controlling the logistical supply chain to ensure lean and just- in-time production.

Steve Dunn, Exol sales director, said: “We are extremely grateful to Jaguar Land Rover for allowing  hand their excellent facility and lean manufacturing process. As a product manufacturer, we continue to implement lean manufacturing strategies into our business with the aim to reduce waste and ensure a clean and safe working environment.”

Exol Lubricants, the UK’s largest independent oil blender, has bolstered its lean production expertise with a visit to Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) production facility at Castle Bromwich, Birmingham. Exol’s operation team visited the Castle Bromwich site, which

suggests, involves producing goods and services while stripping out waste. As a result there is no ‘fat’ involved in production.
