arm greetings to each of you this beautiful December! As we prepare for the holidays and approach the end of our

calendar year, it’s a wonderful time to slow down and appreci- ate the people and the beauty in our lives. Actually, it’s always a good time to do this, but we too often get caught up with the “busyness” of day-to-day living. If you read my publisher’s letter in November, you may

recall how I spoke of life being perfect in this moment. I also wrote that, because we’re always seeking more and better, we

too often forget that this moment is our life, no matter how complicated, sublime, over- whelming, serendipitous, lonely, joyous, solemn, hopeful, courageous, synchronous, messy or blissful. The key for me is to look at what’s going on as part of the tapestry of my life and

not let one event, thought or opinion of another define my life. Isn’t that a beautiful thought? The tapestry of your life. I’m reminded of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow’s poem A Psalm of Life, which

illustrates perfectly the passing of time, the striving for greatness and being alive in the present moment while leaving a mark on the world.

A Psalm of Life

Tell me not, in mournful numbers, Life is but an empty dream! For the soul is dead that slumbers, And things are not what they seem.

Life is real! Life is earnest! And the grave is not its goal; Dust thou art, to dust returnest, Was not spoken of the soul.

Not enjoyment, and not sorrow, Is our destined end or way; But to act, that each to-morrow Find us farther than to-day.

Let us, then, be up and doing, With a heart for any fate; Still achieving, still pursuing, Learn to labor and to wait.

I don’t have room for all nine stanzas, so I listed the first three and the final one. But I encourage you to read the whole poem, which you can easily find online or at your library. It’s a timeless reminder of how to be alive in our own lives. Weave into your tapestry some wonder and amazement at this magical time of the year!
