Supermarket plan revealed

THE introduction of a new supermarket is the latest plan for Springfield Park in Maidstone. Planning consultantWYGPlanning and Envi- ronment has been told by Maidstone Council that no environmental impact assessment is needed for its plan to develop the empty site with a 2,324 sq m supermarket, filling station and housing, giving it the green light to submit detailed plans. This is not the first time proposals have been approved for the two-hectare site in Royal En- gineers Road, which was home to the county council’s offices until the late 1990s.

Fox advice SOLINPARC Ltd has been given planning permission to erect four houses on garden land at 80 and 82 Wrangleden Close, ParkWood. Maidstone Council gave the go-ahead, but advised the ap- plicant that any demolition works and vegetation clearing should take place outside bird nesting season and away from periods when foxes may be raising their young. An earlier proposal for six three-storey houses floundered after the council said the scheme was unacceptable.

Offices, flats and retail units have all been ap- proved for the site, near Kent History & Library Centre, which has been vacant formore than 15 years – but WYG, working for landowner Augur Buchler, said it already had interest from a number of supermarkets interested in taking up the retail space that would be created. A 300- space car park beneath the store and 16 river- front apartments are also expected to be included in the proposals. WYG says the development would create 280

jobs and will shortly submit full details of the scheme to the council.
