Group protests at woodland homes

PROTESTERS are stepping up their cam- paign to save open countryside near Alling- ton from a plan for 600 homes. The outline application byCroudaceHomes

for land east of Hermitage Lane comes after Maidstone Council approved 244 homes at nearby Preston Hall. The scheme has been in the offing since spring, when Maidstone Council included Bluebell Wood in its draft strategic housing allocation – despite a petition signed by over 2,000 opponents. Residents say the development would

mean another 3,000 car journeys a day in the area and the loss of farmland, ancient wood- land and wildlife. The New Allington Action Group held a protest at the Mid Kent Shopping Centre in Allington, where people were urged to make their objections known to Maidstone Coun- cil.

JamesWillis, a resident and vice-chairman of NAAG, said: “It has been great to see the

fordable housing that would create a self-suf- ficient and attractive neighbourhood for fam- ilies.

The applicant says the scheme includes land for a school, community centre and af-

Two access roads would be established – one off Hermitage Lane and the other from Howard Drive, demolishing 102 and 104 Howard Drive. Mr Willis described the plans as short- sighted and damaging, saying: “Croudace has put in outline plans, cramming in over 500 homes on a greenfield site, clearly showing an access road and footways to be bulldozed through the much-treasured BluebellWood.” Fellow campaigner Diana Lewins added: “Local people demonstrated how much they value BluebellWoods earlier this year.We are urging local residents to write to the council.” Residents are invited to NAAG’smeetings
