Maryland 4-H Horsemen’s Party Report


At the annual Horsemen’s Party, held on October 6 in Clarksville, the following people were recognized for their continual support of Maryland’s 4-H programs. Conrad Arnold was honored with the Maryland 4-H Horse Program Youth Development award while Karen Macleod earned the Maryland 4-H Horse Program Volunteer award. Holly Robinson Wins First Joe Kelly Unsung Hero Award


Catherine H. Robinson is the winner of the inaugural Joe Kelly Unsung Hero award. Better known as Holly, she has been involved with T oroughbred horses since she went to work as a teenager for Mikey Smithwick on his farm in Hydes. Holly went on to work for such notable Maryland trainers as Tom Voss and Dr. Irvin Frock. She left Maryland to be an assistant trainer for Roger Attfi eld before returning to start her own training business. Holly has been a mentor to many young people who want the opportunity to learn about the horse business. Perhaps the most notable is Rosie Napravnik, who worked with Holly while in high school. Rosie has gone on to become a top jockey and Holly has continued to support and advise many others behind the scenes. “If there is ever a stray dog, cat everyone calls Holly to

Jen Patterson, Orb’s exercise rider and chief caretaker, accepted the award on Janney’s behalf. Patterson manages a string of horses who are stabled at the Fair Hill Training Center in Elkton.


Ocean City Beach Riding Opened You can now ride on the beach in Ocean


City! But you must fi rst apply for a permit. Applications can be obtained online at www. oceancitymd.gov. T e cost is $20 for a single-day permit and $50 for a seasonal permit. Riding will be allowed on the beach beginning at 27th Street and extending south to the inlet jetty between the hours of 6 a.m. and 5 p.m. until March 30, 2014.
