CELEBRATEMaidstone – the town’s search for a star competition – will be looking to honour the area’s unsung heroes from the Voluntary Sector this year. The awards – now in their third year – include
two new categories, honouring the next genera- tion of good Samaritans (young volunteers under 16) and those keeping Maidstone’s countryside and wildlife safe. Neil Pattison (left), chair of Cele-

the voluntary sector will uncover hundreds of stories of good deeds.” The winner of the Celebrate Maidstone Life-
time Achievement award will be announced in December, but the public are invited to vote for the stars of the other categories, which include:
Quarry scheme IN last month’s edition, Mail Marks correctly stated that the list of sup- porters for the planning application by Gallagher to extend quarrying in Oaken Wood, Barming, included Kent Archaeological Group. We have been asked to point out that this group should not be con- fused with Kent Archaeological So- ciety and that the society did not support this application as such an action would not be within its rules or aims.

A COUPLE from Loose Road, Maidstone, had to be rescued from a fire caused by an unattended candle in a neighbouring flat. Two fire crews were called to the two-storey property just before 8pm after a blaze broke out in a first floor flat. When they arrived, flames were pouring out of the bay window. Firefighters tackled the fire using a hose reel, main jet and a ventilation fan to clear the smoke. The couple were rescued from a flat roof. stereo. They thought they had blown them out fully before leaving their home. The candles melted through the top and caught light. “Fortunately, the property’s smoke alarms alerted other residents to the blaze, but they were unaware the couple were not in the prop- erty and opened the flat door, allowing the fire to take hold quickly and cause considerable heat and smoke damage to the other flats.” Fire crews prevented the fire spreading into the roof and gave oxygen to one of the residents before he was taken to hospital by ambulance. It took two hours to deal with the fire.
