Store approved despite protests
A SAINSBURY’s Local store is to open in Loose Road, Maidstone despite warnings about its effect on neighbouring businesses. Earlier this year a planning application to
erect the convenience store and nine homes on the site of Maidstone Ambulance Station was refused by Maidstone Council’s plan- ning committee as itwas felt the Sainsbury’s would have compromised the design, lay- out and amenity space of the residential el- ement of the development. But a revamped scheme by applicant Oliver James Homes, reducing the number of dwellings to eight, was accepted by Maidstone Council. North Loose Residents Association opposed any retail develop-
Homes proposed FLOYD Courtnell has applied to erect four three-bed terraced homes on land ad- jacent to 2a Gladstone Road, Maidstone. A supporting statement says the pro-
posed buildings would be as “unobtru- sive as possible”. It added: “The new dwellings will con-
tinue the street frontage as well as mak- ing full use of a visually unattractive site currently existing between Greenwich House and 2 Gladstone Road.” Maidstone Council will determine the planning application.
Extension is approved FAY Gooch, the borough councillor for Barming, has been given a certificate of lawfulness to erect a single-storey rear ex- tension at 137 Heath Road.

ment on the site, claiming the area was ad- equately served by Boughton Parade, with a a newsagent, takeaway and a pharmacy. Changes to the original scheme included
more parking and a greater separation be- tween the dwellings and Sainsbury’s. But there were still 54 objections to the scheme, with respondents concerned about highway safety, parking and the impact on shops in Boughton Parade. Objector Mr Abbott said: “This store is not required in our area – we have one already.” He preferred the scheme for 14 dwellings
– minus the Sainsbury’s – that had already been given planning permission last year. “If this is approved thenwe, and the busi-
nesses, will have been walked over.” Mr Atkinson, representing the applicant,
said: “The proposal will provide a top-up shopping facility that is available at times when peoplewant to use it.We have sought to overcome the reasons for refusal in a pos- itive and constructive manner.” Cllr Mike Hogg, a local ward and commit-
tee member, said the retail store would add more traffic to an area that was “crammed”. However, Cllr Tony Harwood pointed out
to fellow committee members that the prin- ciple of having a retail store was not a rea- son given for the earlier refusal. The application was approved with 10 votes for, one against and one abstention.
