COTSWOLD Nutrition

Cotswold Essence columnist, naturopathic nutritional therapist Caroline Peyton gives seasonal tips on how to improve our health and well-being.

Useful Tips towards a Healthier Energetic Body

DID you know that stress is now the most common cause of long term sickness in the UK, with the average number of absent days per employees being 9.1 per annum? We live in a world where

our lifestyles have evolved to be much more stressful than our genetic make-up can cope with, particularly as stress today is a “constant’ in many lives, rather than the “on-off” types of stress our ancient ancestors would have experienced. For many practitioners,

stress is one of the main reasons that clients seek alternative treatment and my experience in practice confirms that stress may be quite debilitating to the body as it has an impact on so many physiological levels. Nutritional therapy looks at

how the body systems are integrated with one another- you can not look at one part of the body without considering the whole; and a nutrition protocol is based on this. Stress triggers a cascade of hormones that may in turn lead to an inflammatory response elsewhere in the body. Stress “turns off” the digestive function which is considered to be non-essential in a stressful situation. Remember we are programmed to Fight or Flight from danger so eating a meal during these times would not have been a priority. The stress response and the

hormones involved use considerable energy and many nutrients. Our adrenal glands- the main stress organs- use more vitamin C than anywhere else in the body so long-term stress may impact our immunity.

We need to feed our bodies

really well during life’s stressful events. However it is often during these times that we tend to reach for stimulants like caffeine and alcohol and more sugary foods. Yet rapid swings in blood sugar levels are a cause of stress to the body, so the worst thing we can do is consume more sugary foods and caffeine! We really take our bodies

for granted- and in some ways so we should as they are amazing at adapting and coping with what we throw at them. But sometimes we do push them too far and it is then that we need to nurture them back to health, taking time to listen to body signals, ease off the accelerate button and start to take nutrition really seriously. At the very least remove processed sugary foods and reduce stimulants. My clients have been

amazed at the difference good nutrition has made to their health and wish they’d had the knowledge I share much earlier in their lives.
