Eddie Edwards with his wife Sam

and daughters Ottilie, eight, and Honey, six at their home in Woodchester

Eddie the Eagle’. I asked somebody

who that was and they told me it was me.” And while Eddie didn’t quite finish

on the podium – he came last – he will never forget the experience. He says: “Competing at the Olympics was a dream come true and to hear 89,000 people at the 120m hill all chanting my name was incredible. And it was the same at the closing ceremony, when the president of the organising committee said ‘some of you have soared like an eagle’ and everyone started again.” Calgary turned Eddie’s life upside

down, of course. Eddie says: “My feet didn’t touch the ground for the next two years, as I was travelling all over the world with promotional work.” Once the dust had settled, however,

he came back to England, took some more GCSEs and embarked on a law degree at De Montfort University in Leicester. He adds: “After graduating I immediately went to Las Vegas and

married my girlfriend Sam, who I’d met in my first year at uni, then we came back to set up home in North Woodchester.” The couple now have two daughters,

Ottilie (eight) and Honey (six) and Eddie is enjoying having a bit of time to devote to family life. His PR work has, taken off again

since his Splash! victory in February. Eddie recalls: “When I was asked to do Splash! I thought I’d love to try diving, so I signed up. I only had around 40 hours training before the final, so there wasn’t much time to learn, but I did far better than I ever thought I would. “Working with Tom Daley

was great,” he adds. “He’s only 18, but such a nice guy, and doing a synchro dive with him was amazing as he’s so good he could adapt his dive to whatever I did.”

Looking to the future Eddie says: “I’d like to go ski

jumping again but in the meantime I’m loving being at home with the family plus the sheer variety of all the building jobs on the house, and my public speaking work.” And he concludes: “If I can find time I might even decide to use my law degree . . . so if anyone needs a 60-year-old lawyer, which is how old I’ll be when I’ve qualified, just give me a shout.”
