THIS time of year can often be a bit deflating as we leave behind our glorious summer and thoughts turn to open fires and the autumnal chill that is just around the corner. I particularly love this time of year in the
Cotswolds. Sometimes the colours on the landscape as I drive around are so beautiful they literally do take my breath away. There is no doubt about it, we are very lucky to live in such an idyllic
part of the country with a wealth of things to do on our doorstep whatever the weather. For our cover for this issue we have chosen one of the magnificent Acers
that can be seen at Westonbirt Arboretum near Tetbury. Thousands of visitors flock to see the autumn colours here every year in
all its spectacular glory and it is well worth a visit. It’s the time of year for gathering up the harvest and putting the garden
to bed for the winter. And if you have a glut of damsons this year, Sue Bradley has come up
with an easy recipe for the perfect pickle partner for cold meats. Sitting in the blazing sunshine in Tony Russell’s stunning garden in
Avening will seem like a distant memory by the time this magazine is published. Tony was head gardener at Westonbirt Arboretum for 13 years and we
spent a lovely afternoon together as he spoke enthusiastically about his plans to create a Himalayan garden in Snowdonia. He has been a prolific writer and broadcaster since leaving the
Arboretum and we have three copies of his latest book to give away to Cotswold Essence readers. Mums in the countryside are a creative lot. Fabric designer Vanessa

Arbuthnott wanted something to fit in with looking after her four children and created what is now a top-selling brand from her kitchen table. Jenny Inglis and Chritine Bass also wanted to find a family friendly
career and the charming Ditsy Doodles was born. They will have you searching under the bed for all those precious first drawings your little ones used to bring home.
