CASE STUDY

ALEXANDER BAKER KINGSTON BUSINESS SCHOOL MBA

What Attracted You to the Course at Kingston Business School? I chose to study my MBA at Kingston Business School after looking at many of the top business schools because it offered more value for money, it is extremely well regarded, highly accredited and has a superb reputation. It is very well located in its leafy green campus, which made a nice change from the City and a great place to study.

Kingston offers a rich MBA experience, I was able to draw on the vast experience of my cohort from very different backgrounds and business experiences, choose from a variety of modules, and was given excellent advice that helped me progress into my new career.

What Was Your Experience Like on the Course? I was able to draw on the vast experience of the other people on the course from different sectors and backgrounds – which is hugely important. The volume of work is immense, but with discipline and routine, you get through it, and even have time for some fun!

There are a good number of electives – I chose entrepreneurship. All the tutors have real life sector experience. I would really recommend Kingston Business School to anyone interested in doing an MBA.

How Did it Help Your Career? They really do help to pick out your individual skill sets and develop them. The careers advice and support you get is fantastic and I was put in touch with the company I now work for. I am a Director at ME-A Resources (an upstream oil and gas investment company) and Partner at Jubilee where I am responsible for corporate development.

Get Your Finances Sorted! 2. nd the d MBA Tour

Study of all kinds is getting progressively more expensive in the UK, resulting in extra stress being heaped on students. The good news is that, with wise choices, you can largely eliminate financial stress from your life. As a postgraduate student you want to try and obtain the best funding package you possibly can, right from the outset. Many UK postgraduates receive in excess of £10,000/year to live on which makes living expenses far more manageable. Seriously compare the funding options open to you and look for the most attractive financial offer that still makes sense from a study perspective. Be sure to check to see if a postgraduate bursary is available.

Your time as a postgraduate student should be one of the most incredible and memorable periods of your life with the opportunities for furthering your knowledge, producing meaningful work and making lasting friendships never likely to be better. That being said, for some postgraduate students, it can be an extremely stressful time that is filled with difficult and unforeseen challenges. Fortunately there are ways to deal these challenges which increase the likelihood of your time as a postgraduate being the fantastic experience that it really ought to be. Let’s take a look at the top 5 ways for dealing with postgraduate stress that you can get started using straight away!

#1 12/07/2013 14:53 Develop A Good Relationship With Your Supervisor

Probably the most important relationship that can make or break your time as a postgraduate student is that which you have and develop with your postgraduate supervisor. A good working relationship with your advisor is essential so that you can make good progress on your thesis, overcome any and all problems with your research and feel confidence that you are being capably guided through the challenging aspects of postgraduate study. If you have several postgrad offers then you should meet potential advisors before deciding to get the best “match” for you to work with.

#3 #5

You finish university and you’re looking for a job. Where do you start? With UK unemployment at 2.51 million, long term unemployment at a 17 year high and youth unemployment at 979,000, finding a job can be a daunting prospect. Nokia believe they may have the answer.

#2 Work Out At The Uni Gym

Nothing beats working out to leave you feeling re- energised, revitalised and massively less stressed. With a heavily subsidised Uni gym on offer there is no excuse not to.

Build Strong Friendships

As a postgraduate student it is tempting to throw yourself so completely into your studies that everything else comes second. While tempting, it is actually a mistake, not least from a social perspective. Friendships and social interaction are incredibly important when it comes to dealing with stress and so you should definitely not neglect them completely in favour of non-stop study (except, perhaps, at exam time!).

#4 Take Advantage of Help on Offer

Thankfully nowadays, with the more modern approach to stress, there is plentiful help available if you need it and student wellbeing is a priority. Be sure to check out the support that’s on offer from tutors, counsellors and other helpful sources.

THERE’S AN APP FOR THAT... By Eve Stanger

So Why is Job Lens Different?

1 2 3 4 5

The app uses augmented reality technology to work through the camera lens and display all relevant job vacancies for you.

JobLens can give you company profiles of potential employers to make sure you know what you’re letting yourself in for.

Nokia uses your social networks to let you know who you know, using your network is a key way to get a foot on the career ladder.

Want to know where you’ll be working every day? The app will give detailed local area demographics and information.

Got a job interview? The app will even use the inbuilt maps to navigate you step by step to your interview.

Introducing a new app, JobLens, Nokia believe they can lower the boundaries between job seekers and employers – perhaps there could help you find a job waiting for you just two miles up the road. Essentially the app does the job hunting for you. The days of flicking through newspaper listings or endlessly scrolling through the adverts on Gumtree could be over, as JobLens claims to use your qualifications to find the right jobs for you.

JobLens could make finding a job a much simpler process for the unemployed. This will particularly be effective for young people who are taking their steps towards their first jobs, rather than those with years of experience and contacts. The catch is that this app, and all extensions, will only be available on new Nokia Windows phones – perhaps in an attempt to boost their market share. That aside, the app has come back with glowing reviews and testimonies that show that JobLens could really empower (Nokia phone using) jobseekers and change the way in which we seek employment.
