World-Leading Research With Real- World Impact

Research underpins everything we do at UCLan – in the recent UK Research Assessment Exercise, UCLan achieved 11 areas of research judged as ‘world-leading’ and many others rated as of international significance. Research informs the curriculum of our postgraduate programmes, and our teaching teams include professors and researchers who are leaders in their fields. We have a reputation for applying our research in real-world situations, to help develop innovative solutions and technologies that have real impact.

Our ground-breaking research covers a wide range of disciplines – read about some of our most eminent researchers:

Professor Caroline Watkins is head of UCLan’s nurse-led stroke research unit - the only one of its kind in the UK – and advisor to the Department of Health. She has recently been made a Fellow of the European Stroke Organisation, for the decade of ground-breaking research she has undertaken at UCLan.

Professor Richard Taylor, a qualified barrister and winner of the Society of Legal Scholars prize for best conference paper, heads up UCLan’s criminal law academic team and is author of a leading criminal law text used in high court decision-making.

Dr Roger Clowes is a member of our world-renowned astrophysics team. Working as part of a team of international astronomers, Dr Clowes recently discovered the largest structure in the Universe, a cluster of young galaxies stretching four billion light years across.
