SOME 250 Grenadier Guards will be passing through Maid- stone on Tuesday, September 24, as they cycle 233miles from Wellington Barracks, London, toWaterloo in Belgium. The guards, who will be ac- companied by the renowned Band of the Grenadier Guards, are raising money for their regi- mental charity and the band will perform in Jubilee Square from 11am to 2pm. The Colonel’s Fund Grenadier Guards has been raising money since 2007 to support soldiers who have been injured in Afghanistan, and the families of those who have been killed.

The Grenadier Guards have carried out three tours in Afghanistan and have lost 15 members of the regiment who were killed in action. In addi- tion, the regiment has sustained a large number of battle casual- ties, with many suffering life changing injuries. The cyclists will pass through Maidstone on their way to Dover, with riders coming through Jubilee Square as the band plays. Residents are welcome to

watch the bandmarch down the High Street at 10:45am, enjoy the concert and show their sup- port for the cyclists.

During the concert, Cllr Clive English, the Mayor of Maid- stone, will host a reception in the Town Hall with the Lord Lieutenant of Kent, Major the Viscount De L’Isle, formerly of the Grenadier Guards and Pres- ident of the West Kent (Tun- bridge Wells) Branch of the Grenadier Guards Association. After a stopover in Dover, the

riders will cross the channel by ferry, where the band will en- tertain fellow passengers. After an overnight stop at

Ypres, they are scheduled to ar- rive at Waterloo during the af- ternoon of Thursday, September 26.

Stadium clash POLICE were called to the ground of Maidstone United during the first full game of the Stones’ new season. Cans of beer were thrown

onto the pitch as supporters of Wealdstone, North London, clashed with MaidstoneUnited fans during and after the 1-1 draw. The club has vowed to in-

crease security and is checking CCTV footage to try to identify the culprits. They are also look- ing at increasing the police presence at home games. More than 2,000 fans were in

the Gallagher stadium at the time of the trouble. Police dis- persed several groups of fight- ers, but no arrests were made.
