Charities join to help homeless


TWOMaidstone charitieswhichsupport the homeless and vulnerable have merged. Maidstone Christian Care,whichoperates the Maid-


stone Day Centre and Food for Thought, has linked with Goodsell House, a hostel for homeless men, to form a newcharity – Homeless Care. TheMayor of Maidstone, Cllr Clive English, and Cllr


Peter Homewood, vice chair of KCC, were at a cele- bration evening to mark the merger, held at the Maid- stone Day Centre, in Knightrider Street. Chairman of trustees Mike FitzGerald presented a


cheque for£15,000 to Homeless Care on behalf of En- terprise Training Maidstone – a company of which he is a director and which used to provide YTS training to young people in the town. Themoney will be used to provide additional “move


on” accommodation tomeetthe growing needs of the homeless in Maidstone. Mr FitzGerald thanked the people, the businesses,


the shops andretailers, churchesandschoolsofMaid- stone, who had supported the charity over the years and said: “Without their support,wewouldnot be able to serve those vulnerable in our society.”

He said the merger would enable Maidstone to re-


spond to the needs of the homeless and vulnerable, and said: “Thismerger is just one step on the ladder of change. If we can continue to lead the way in Maid- stone, perhaps it will persuade our nation to rise up anddeliver for thepoorandleastwell-off in our society. “There is no reason for anyone togo hungry inMaid-


stone because of the generosity of its people and I thank God for that – and the people here today.” Cllr English said: “It is inspiring to see some of the


work that has takenplace in Maidstone in thepast few years – but a lot of challenges remain.”


Music hall and murder at museum


A UNIQUE production featur- ing a “culture clash” of drama, music andwords will see Maid- stone Museum hosting a night of “Sex, Drugs andMusic Hall”. The live performance,which is


free of charge, is based on one book, two actors, three genera- tions and four true life stories. Clive Parker-Sharp, author of


“The Box”, on which the show is based, is a maverick musi- cian, known for pushing bound-


aries, andwas at the forefront of the punk movement. He is joined by Marshall Star


in the show, which is based on the diaries of the controversial Victorian African, pentecostal- ist Thomas Brem-Wilson. It delves into the impact of his actions across 200 years, in- cluding music hall, gangsters, court trials and murder. The performance is an hour long, after which Clive will be


available for book signing. Maidstone Council’s muse-


ums and heritage manager, Simon Lace, said: “We are de- lighted to welcome this unique production to the museum. It forms part of a cultural and arts programme thatwe are proud to offer the community.” The last performance is at the museum at 2pm on Friday, Sep- tember 27. Although tickets are free, booking is necessary.


Police chief to


tackle violence MAIDSTONE’S new town cen- tre policing inspector has pledged to crackdown on vio- lent crime. Inspector Justin Watts, who


took up the key position this month, told the Downs Mail: “Violent crime will be a big focus of the team’s attention. “We want to make sure that anyone who visits Maidstone, whether in the day or the night, feels safe. Equally, we will make sure that anyone that vis- its Maidstone with the inten- tion of causing trouble is dealt with appropriately and that we will make sure that we use all the powers at our disposal to do so.” The 39-year-old married fa- ther of two lives in the borough.
