Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the concourse and outside the arena. No tickets are needed and spectators can watch the pony competitions in the arena as well paint horseshoes and get pony rides outside. T ere will be many other kid-friendly activities as well throughout the morning. Celebrity barrel racing makes its return to the main arena on Saturday evening. Terrier races will also be back that night as an exhibition be- tween the competition classes.
Barn Night Blast
T ursday’s Barn Night is always a favorite for the whole family and this year the evening has been revamped with more exhibitions and activities. T e fun begins at 6 p.m. with a Stablemates painting party, hosted by Breyer Animal Creations. T e fi rst 100 kids to arrive will receive a special prize, also courtesy of Breyer. T at evening will also hold a scavenger hunt for a chance to win an Essex Classics show shirt. Autograph sessions with a variety of top international show jumpers will be on the concourse towards the end of the evening. New for 2013 is a
Shetland Pony Racing exhibition, presented by Charles Owen. Dubbed the WIHS Shetland Pony International
Steeplechase, the exhibition will feature young jockeys galloping over hurdles in two races. Also new this year will be a photo booth on the concourse hosted by T e Equiery. Stop by for a special coloring book version of T e Equiery and to get your picture on Facebook! T is year’s offi cial Barn Night contests include awards for the Largest Overall Group as well as Largest Group from Maryland, Virginia and DC/Other states. T ere will be prizes for the Best Group Spirit, Best Group Banner and Best Group Video. Many of these contests require preregistration so go to www.wihs. org for more details. Prizes include a clinic with international three-day eventing Olympian Will Coleman (presented by Cavalor), a golf cart refurbished in your group’s colors (donated by United Metro Golf Carts), gear from C&A Sportswear and $5,000 in gift certifi cates from Dover Saddlery. Also on T ursday evening is the Buck Breast Cancer Party in the Acela Club. A portion of the proceeds will go to benefi t the Breast Cancer Research Foundation. Tickets include dinner and an open bar.
Flat Major at the Devon Horse Show this past summer
2013 WIHS Youth Ambassador Elizabeth Kruse
WIHS’s mascot Major sent out “Flat Majors” to recruit Barn Night groups. When barns preregister for Barn Night, they receive a Flat Major in the mail to take photos around their barn. Barns were asked to send photos back to the WIHS staff and many of Flat Major’s summer adventures were posted on WIHS’s Barn Night Facebook page. Flat Major also made stops at the Devon Horse Show, Upperville Colt & Horse Show, Loudoun Benefi t and
more. He even spent the 4th of July at Rock Creek Park Horse Center in Washington, DC. Other stops included River Farm Stables and even the West Coast where he was seen at the Reining by the Bay show.
Kruse Named Youth Ambassador Elizabeth Kruse of McLean, VA was named
this year’s Youth Ambassador, the fi fth rider in the Youth Ambassador program. Elizabeth is a 16-year-old junior at Langley High School and competes often. She showed at WIHS for the fi rst time in 2012 and competed at the WIHS Regional Horse Show in 2009. Elizabeth was also on the WIHS Junior Committee last year. T is year’s WIHS Junior Committee
