Maryland Will Miss Sherlock Swann Gillet, 77, of


Glyndon died of natural causes while out riding on September 9. Gillet was an active member of the Maryland Combined Training Association since the late 1970s. He helped organize the MCTA Horse Trials at Jackson Hole from 1982 to 1988 and was instrumental in promoting restricted divisions for junior and amateur riders. He hosted the MCTA Jenny Camp starter event at his Hunting Ridge Farm from 1986 to 1988. Gillet was honored for his lifetime service and support to the sport of eventing at the MCTA 40th Anniversary party in 2012. He was

T e University of Maryland has hired Brittany Hoff man as the Equine and Environmental Science


Coordinator for UMD Extension 4-H Youth Development. Hoff man grew up in Southern Maryland and has been an avid equestrian her entire life. She graduated from West Virginia University with a degree in Agricultural Business Management and interned at Pin Oak Stud Farm in Versailles, KY.

A speedy recovery to… …Carrollton Hounds member Janet Martinez, who had surgery to repair a broken arm sustained when falling from a horse; …MHIB’s Horse Pal gal Val D’Ambrosio of Easton, who is recovering from a broken ankle and dislocated knee;


…Green Spring Valley Hounds’ Ned Halle, who sustained a broken collarbone and several broken ribs after he and his horse were struck by a car on Butler Road; his horse died almost instantly.


In September, the American Association of Equine Practitioners (AAEP) announced that Maryland vet Kathleen Anderson will serve as the 2014 vice president. A native of British Columbia, Dr. Anderson grew up actively involved with horses as an eventing competitor, international competition groom, barn manager and racetrack exercise rider prior to obtaining her DVM from the Western College of Veterinary Medicine (University of Saskatchewan) in 1986.


Following graduation, she entered private practice in South Hamilton, MA under United States Equestrian Team veterinarian Dr. A. Martin Simensen. For the past 20 years she has owned Equine Veterinary Care, PC, a racing and performance practice located at the Fair Hill Training Center and off ering ambulatory and outpatient services. Dr. Anderson serves as vice chair of the AAEP’s Racing Committee and as a member of the Leadership Development Committee and Foundation Advisory Council. She has volunteered as an AAEP On Call representative since 1997 and previously served on the board of directors from 2006-2009 and on the Ethics and Membership Development committees.


Additionally, Dr. Anderson is a member of the Grayson-Jockey Club Research Foundation’s Research Advisory Committee and serves on the Maryland Horse Industry Board’s Equine Health Advisory Committee for the State Vet.

PA, mother of Carrollton Hounds member Diana Keilholtz Gunder, died on August 19. She was 83. Cashin was born in Allentown, PA but moved to Braddock Heights in Maryland in 1964 with her husband George. While there she worked at the Jeanne Bussard Workshop, a nonprofi t organization in Frederick that was created to assist people with developmental disabilities and their families. In 1972, the family moved to Harpers Ferry, WV where she started a new career with the Appalachian Trail Conference. Cashin moved to Waynesboro in 2001 and enjoyed gardening at their Blue Rock Farm.
