Graduate Resourcing Manager, Morrisons


When Carla Murray moved from Morrisons manufacturing division to take up the post of Graduate Resourcing Manager in January 2012, her brief was to align the various pockets of graduate recruitment work going on within the business and make Morrisons a destination of choice for graduates. This year the retailer will recruit 122 graduates – up from just 12 in 2010 - with 135 earmarked for 2014, and it is also featured in The Times Top 100 Graduate Employers… Here, she explains how Morrisons has grown its employer brand at such speed…

The challenge There was some great graduate recruitment work going on but we had been working independently of each other and attending fairs specifi c to the business area rather than being branded as Morrisons. We hadn’t ventured in to campus activity or built our relationships with the universities so no one knew how many great opportunities we could offer. We didn’t have a presence in the graduate space as a destination for graduates to begin their career. It was really clear that students just didn’t know what we did or envisage a career with us. Most could pick us out as a retailer but they didn’t see the breadth of schemes we had or what a career in retail could hold; we needed to get out there and shout about it – fast!

Dalton Phillips our CEO refers to “building the base” − getting the fundamentals right is what makes you successful. When you have a solid core you can begin to grow the value and make yourself stand out. There is no point having a stand out attraction campaign if the application process lets you down. I identifi ed a few keys areas to start to improve the experience for both the business and the candidate, including consistency of process – across the schemes; effi ciency – making best use of time and resource; engage – internally and externally; and attraction – spreading the word.
