EXPORTING LIVE BISON
Elk Island National Park is one of 43 national parks administered by the Parks Canada Agency. It is located 35 km east of Edmonton, Alberta along the Yellowhead Highway, and covers roughly 194 km2
.
Celebrating its 100th anniversary, the park was founded in 1913 to provide a sanctuary for a diversity of wildlife including elk, bison, moose and trumpeter swans. It is also unique in that it is the only national park completely surrounded by a fence in order to protect Canada’s recovery herds for plains bison and woods bison.
The park is open 7 days a week year-round. In summer you can camp, hike, bike, golf, canoe and more; while winter-time provides more camping, cross country skiing (ungroomed trails), snowshoeing and continued wildlife gazing.
The park plays an important role in bison population recovery efforts around the globe. In addition to transferring bison to conservation efforts across North America, bison have also been flown to the Sakha Republic in Russia.
And you thought Canadians just exported oil, lumber, minerals and wheat!
