Great lighting for Great School

Operating the stage and auditorium lighting in the Great School using a touch screen computer would have been the stuff of dreams until relatively recently. And as for doing the same using an app on a mobile ‘phone . . !

Yet both are now possible following the recent installation of a £44,000 digital lighting scheme, a proportion of which was funded by an Old Ipswichian and the Friends of Ipswich School.

Preset positions allow the “intelligent lighting” to be adjusted to suit different events, such as showing a DVD, hearing a speaker, a parents’ evening, exams or a recital. The ability to provide suitable lighting for an event at the fl ick of a switch is of great help to event organisers, who can confi dently use Great School without having to engage a lighting technician.

Head of Drama, Lindsey Ward, says, “The state-of-the-art installation also

Caleb Bond (nearest the camera) and Elliott Mo at the controls

allows pupils to choose the stage lighting option within the Drama GCSE. This has provided greater breadth within the course and the marks awarded for this module can account for 40% of their fi nal grade.”

OIs who have attended events in the rather dark and claustrophobic Great School over recent years will love the spacious, airy feel produced not only by the new lighting but also by the pale cream walls. The new proscenium arch is a great improvement, while the fl oor has been sanded to restore its original colour and then sealed.

125th Anniversary Appeal

The Old Ipswichian Club 125th Anniversary Appeal, seeking support for Music, Sport and Bursaries, was launched on the 29th June. The magnifi cent sum of £384,000 had already been donated by Old Ipswichians towards an Appeal target of £1m. My thanks go to those Old Ipswichians who have supported the Appeal since its launch, thereby enabling us to increase the funds raised from £384,000 to £566,000.

In November, in the country’s fi rst PCC elections (Police and Crime Commissioners, not Press Complaints Commission or Parochial Church Council), Tim Passmore OI (’66-’77) was elected Police and Crime Commissioner for Suffolk.

Tim is a self-employed agribusiness and business consultant, specialising in agriculture, tourism and economic development. Until his election as PCC, he was Leader of Mid Suffolk District Council.

Visitors to the Ipswich School website are now able to view short videos of the Senior School, the Prep, and Senior School boarding at Westwood. Produced by Suffolk Films, the three fast-moving videos are aimed particularly at potential parents, and feature comments from staff and pupils.

Headmaster Nicholas Weaver and Head of Prep Amanda Childs both take the opportunity to explain the school’s approach to its pupils’ education and development.

“I do hope OIs will watch the new videos on our website front page, where they can see current staff and pupils in the Prep, the Senior School and Westwood Boarding House,” says Nicholas Weaver. “We are very pleased with how they refl ect Ipswich School as a happy and successful environment, which, I am sure, will chime with OIs’ own memories.”
