Events Drinks in the city, 14th September
Choir at Durham Cathedral, 28th October
The third “Drinks in the City” took place at the Oyster Shed by the Thames, with over 50 OIs joining Guy Main, OI Club Vice-Chairman and Graham Papenfus, Lindy Hacker and Jack Devlin from the Development Offi ce. One member travelled from Hong Kong to join this most enjoyable occasion.
Battle of the Bands, 26th September
Three OIs joined the school choir as they sung Evensong in Durham Cathedral and for refreshments afterwards. Several other OIs were unable to make it, and had wished the choir well on their tour. It was clear that the choir had played a very important part in the lives of several, mostly recent, leavers, one of whom had been on the choir visit to Durham over 20 years previously. There is now a possibility of establishing an OI ‘Chapel Choir’ community, bringing back together those who want to sing as a group again.
Remembrance Service, 11th November
OIs gathered in the Pavilion for a reception prior to the Big Band Concert, the fi nal event in the school’s 3rd Festival of Music. The concert featured the “Battle of the Bands”, with the Ipswich School Big Band and the Musicians Union Band eventually agreeing a ceasefi re. Sponsored by the OI Club, it was a fabulous evening, and a fi tting fi nale for the most successful festival yet.
Scottish Reunion, 26th October
Thought to be our second reunion north of the border, this took place in Edinburgh. Six OIs, together with Lindy Hacker and Jack Devlin from the Development Offi ce, met in a pub before moving on to a restaurant next door. “It was good to have the opportunity to meet OIs, who have limited access to school, and fi nd out what they are doing,” said Lindy, noting that “most of them seemed to be in property, if the group was in any way representative!”
This year’s Remembrance Service was combined with three house chapel services and included members of the CCF. The total present was about 360, which included over 20 guests from the OI Club. OI President Eddy Alcock read one of the lessons, and the Chairman, James Davey, laid a wreath on behalf of the Club. The Chaplain, Andy Winter, preached. Most who attended enjoyed drinks and nibbles afterwards in the Dining Hall.
