Durham Book Festival: in Partnership with the IAS The IAS will continue its collaboration with the Durham Book Festival on a number of events this year, including public events with some of its IAS Fellows and other academics.
Meet the Academic Authors
Writing in the university requires a particular set of skills and is shaped by some very particular pressures. Academic authors need to present original research, to respond to the cut and thrust of peer reviews, to engage in scholarly debate with colleagues, and to be accessible to wider audiences. What is it like to write in this context? Find out more by meeting a range of Durham University authors.
Thursday 17 October 2013, 6.00pm, Café on the Green, Palace Green, Durham, DH1 3RL

Meet the Fellows
Light plays a central role in the physics of the universe, in the sustenance of life, in the technology that drives societies, in physical and emotional wellbeing, in perceptions of the environment, and in religious and literary metaphor.
The Institute of Advanced Study’s theme of Light during 2013-14 will develop links between approaches to all of these and other aspects of Light. Join IAS Fellows and their Durham University collaborators as they talk about their ideas surrounding this inspiring theme.
Sunday 13 October 2013, Durham Town Hall. For additional information see:

This House Believes that Great Science is Great Science Fiction Does contemporary science have a monopoly over truth? Does writing a novel have anything in common with what happens in scientific laboratories? Join Professors Patricia Waugh (English Studies), Tom McLeish (Physics) and two special guests to debate the relationship between scientific fact, fiction and the role of the imagination. Arguments for and against the motion, followed by questions and comments from the audience, will drive discussion about the role of creativity, abstraction and evidence in our studies.
This event is part of a collaboration between the Durham Book Festival and the Hearing the Voice project with support from the IAS. The event is free and is open to all and will take place on Wednesday 9th October 2013, 8.00 – 10.00pm at University College, Durham University.
Tickets will be made available on the Durham Book Festival website at www.durhambookfestival.
