A Warm Welcome Awaits In Warrington
Warrington on the banks of the River Mersey has been welcoming visitors since the Roman Empire set up camp here at Wilderspool 2000 years ago. Now, the town is an economic powerhouse with a lively cultural scene.
At the heart of the community is Warrington Wolves, who have been in the top flight of teams since the Rugby League was formed in 1895.
Warrington is a real trailblazer too.
It cut the first commercial canal in Britain 1755- 1757 and formed the first Total Abstinence Society in Britain in 1830.
It opened the country’s first public library 1848 and welcomed the first IKEA in the UK in 1987.
The town prospered in the Middle Ages and received a Royal Charter in 1255AD to hold a market, which has been running for over 750 years!
Warrington has seen some major action too.
The town was under siege during the Civil War by Cromwell’s forces and was home to the largest USAF base in Europe in World War II.
It’s always been a strong commercial and retail centre and J & G Greenhalls set up a distillery here in 1761 and is still trading.
Nowadays, Warrington has all the ingredients for a great visit or stay.
