THE HORSE GAZETTE trail riding Relaxing at c bar ranch where the trails are
privately owned by Larry and Martha Montgomery, is a 1,000 acre ranch in the beautiful central Texas hill country of Bosque County. The ranch is not far from Waco and Hillsboro. There are approximately 20 miles of trails to explore. The trails range from basic level ground to very challenging gullies and steep rocky inclines. There are numerous wooded trails and other trails which provide more of an open view. This ranch is full of creeks to water your horse and ride through or along. The trails are not well marked but

Bar Ranch several years ago during an ACTHA (American Compet i t ive Trai l Horse Association) competition and I really enjoyed the diverse and challenging trails. Most recently, we camped out at the ranch in March of this year. What I love about this place is the peace and seclusion you have when camping. Of course during the ACTHA ride there were tons of friendly horse people to visit with, but during my last visit to the ranch, which was not an organized event, it was just myself, my husband, the horses, and our dog LB. We really had the place to ourselves. Relaxing upon the wooden bench swing supported by a wise old leaning Oak perfectly overlooking the pond was one of my favorite pastimes at the Ranch. My family, who live just down the road from C Bar in Whitney, stopped by for a picnic.
I did not get as much riding in as I had planned on, but I sure enjoyed visiting with my family and the quiet beauty of C Bar Ranch. We camped at site number 9, which is located next to two pens under the shade of an oak grove with the creek behind us. The two pens (side by side with five panels for each pen) at sites number 9 and 10 are the only pens available for equestrian camping, but

you can bring your own pens or high tie to the trees. This site has electric, running water, and a fire ring. It was perfect! If you do not have a living quarter trailer you can pitch a tent or rent out the cabin. This is a great place just to chill out but of course there are plenty of trails to enjoy as well. This would be a prime location to plan a family reunion or event as the cabin can be rented out, and there is a covered seating area with tables. There are 17 electric hook up campsites with water sources. Beautiful large oaks are scattered throughout the camping grounds. Plenty of room is available for parking large trailers.
Bar was enjoyable and pretty challenging in some areas. The trails are rocky and really rough in spots so shoes/boots are highly recommended. The trails provide opportunities to work with your horse on going down and up rocky inclines and crossing creeks. When returning to my campsite after the ride I found two black cows happily chomping away at Angel’s hay bag. I got a

Humane Society is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization whose mission is to improve the lives of equines by educating and helping owners, assisting law enforcement agencies, reha- bilitating abused and neglected equines, and placing them into safe, permanent homes. With the on-going drought and eco- nomic hardships, BEHS has been overwhelmed with calls about starving horses through- out Texas. The Bluebonnet Horse Expo will be BEHS’s major fundraiser for the year, and will directly impact the number of horses they will be able to help in the future.
