Arabian news & more from around the state by Ginny Nokes of Seguin, TX.

Our big news this

month is the Arabian Horse As- sociation Youth Nationals. The youth from Texas brought home 100’s of ribbons. They were winners in nearly every class entered. The stories coming back tells many tales of the kids and their actions. Their enthusiasm, dedication, hard work and their support of each other make us proud of these young folks. Adults are thought to be models for our young people but truth be told, we can look to them as role models for ourselves. Mathew Burke tells us it so well in his news from the show. “We are lucky to have a

great group kids to work with and it was nice to see them succeed at this year’s Youth Nationals. You know very well about the preparation they have had to put in this entire show season to be ready .The win with HANNAH JONES was amazing. It was unexpected, although during the class I thought she was doing a re- ally good job. The judges looked at her a lot the whole class and I was beginning to get the idea she might be reserve. When the Reserve was called, I thought we were going to be Top Ten. What a thrill to have her win it. She was 1st

on two cards. This year there

was definitely a large increase in many classes over last year. Some of the small classes of 2012 grew to where you had to make a cut to be in the finals in 2013. The quality of the horses and riders was also up from last year. I saw equitation classes where the com- petition was so close five of the top ten could have won the class. So much quality and the horses were well prepared. The energy

of this year’s show was way up from last year. There were more people in the stands and were so involved in the classes and really cheering the riders. The show was well run. The show staff does a great job making schedules work and seeing everyone accommo- dated. There does have to be more control over the water balloon fights and kids driving golf carts. You saw a lot of people

helping someone in need. It could be as simple as pointing out some ones number was unpinned before a class or loaning a piece of tack. When the big storm blew in Friday night with one class in the ring and one in the warm up where horses and riders needed help getting to a safe place or in the Native Costume Class when the rider fell off and the saddle fell under the horse, the trainers jumped into the ring to catch the runaway horse that was crashing into other hors- es and riders. We had DENISE NICHOLS loan MORGUHN her horse KRA Easter Sunrise for his Showmanship class when his oth- er horse could not make the class. DENISE and SKYE WILLIAMS took lots of time to show Morguhn how to handle “baby” and he got a Top Ten in his class. We could not thank them enough for their generosity. I was impressed with how well many of the Region9 youth did overall. In some classes half of the Top Ten could be from our region and overall it seemed there was always a Region 9 youth in the top tens of a class. Many were champions of their of class- es. The highlights of the trip were my parents came out to nationals for the first time and got to see both Lauren and Morguhn win a top ten so that was very special .

They were very impressed with the enormity of the show and the competition. Tanya’s sister Mitzi came out as well. She showed back in the day and won lots at U.S Nationals when they were in Albuquerque. The show was special because of the wins but also the kids and parents we took there made the show so much fun. We took a smoker and grill and had huge dinners together probably 7 of the 11 nights. With all the grandparents and all the families showing we had about 25 to 30 people, we there was always so much going on. The show was also very bittersweet because it was our daughter Lauren’s last year to show youth. I got a very special photo of her Lauren and her mother after her last class that pretty much said it all. She has always meant so much to our farm, it will be some time before we get used to not having her show as a youth. “(The 2013 Youth Nationals sounds like the shows from way back when. The whole family coming to the show – the cook outs – everyone lending a hand – youth helping and pulling for each other and it was fun. We need to put some of this back in our Arabian rat- ed shows. Thanks Mathew for saying it so well. G)

THOUGHTS OF A HORSE SHOW MOM – BY SHANDA DEWITT

As the date to leave

to go to Youth Nationals ap- proached, I was a giddy and excit- ed as my children were. I literally could not sleep the night before. Youth Nationals are my favorite 2 weeks of the year. Watching our young people including my two work all year long in cold weath- er, in the heat and rain. We depart at 3:00 am giggling, silly giddy with excitement. My daughter Bethany doesn’t go out for school sports or special activities, she rides. Youth Nationals is her Su- per Bowl. My son plays baseball and basketball but always puts his horse activities first. They are committed to showing because they feel the benefit of showing their Arabian is a part of their soul. I truly believe people in the Alamo Arabian Horse Club and the Central Texas Arabian Horse Association are why my children love this with all their hearts. They love their Arabian horses. The people we share this love and experience with are what make it our passion. I have watched these kids all year, at every show, every event, at every lesson, at every clinic supporting each other and helping each other.

Even when

competing against each other in the same class, they are pulling for each other, giving High Fives as they leave the arena. That is what Youth Nationals means to us. The culmination of a year of work with those people that mean so much to us. We laugh, eat, drink, sleep and play together all week. We cry happy and some- times disappointed tears together.

It is an accomplishment just getting to Youth Nationals. Yes we are all proud, and rightfully so. Not a holier than thou kind of proud, but a sense of true accomplishment.

When I go

and watch kids from all across our Nation in that arena, I choke up. I’m proud of all of them. Training with Matt and Tanya at Optimum Training Center is one of the best decisions we have made for our kids. Matt and Tanya truly love their OTC kids. They are all about teaching our kiddos life lessons through their riding. Responsibility, conscien- tiousness, ethics. The kids help when we get to Albuquerque, they help set up and help take down for the trip home. This is definitely a team effort. Watch- ing as Lauren Burke finished her last youth class, we were all crying because as much as we wished for her success and growth, we didn’t want her to leave our Youth group.

The

epitome of what this is all about, she steps off her horse, turns and hugs her mother, crying and pro-

ceeds to thank her for everything. Watching my daughter Bethany squeeze the begeezus out of my husband and her grandmother’s hands waiting to hear her brother Jadon’s number called as a Top Ten winner. Watching my mom and dad laugh and help and learn for themselves what horse showing is all about and learn the benefits it gives our young people. We had three sets of grandparents in our group that came to watch the kids compete. Watching them meet and build friendships with other kids, some of which live thousands of miles away. Yes, without a doubt, Youth Nationals is my favorite 2 weeks of the year.

Who knows better

than the Moms who are such a big part of showing? They are cheerleaders, they prepare the show attire, they sooth the tears when defeat comes and they love a lot? Thanks Shanda. You said it so well. Ginny (ginnyno@ aol.com)
