Ad plan dashed HOPES of using wasted space beneath Maidstone’s flagship Gateway in King Street have been dashed. Cllr Daphne Parvin had hoped the space could be used for advertising or to promote local businesses, hotels and at- tractions, but the council heard the area had been left clear, as it had to be empty and unclut- tered for fire safety reasons.

Blackmail bomb hoaxer jailed

A MAN who planted a fake bomb at aMaidstone supermarket and demanded £10,000 from the store has been jailed. David Williams (48), previ-

ously of Knaves Acre, Headcorn, called Morrisons in St Saviour’s Way, Maidstone. He said he had placed several devices in the store and that £10,000 needed to be taken toHeadcorn railway sta- tion.Hesaidthatiftheydidn’t believe him they should check aisle 23 of the store. The calls were traced to telephone kiosks in Maidstone town centre. Staff at the store checked the aisle and found a boxcontaining a plastic box with a flashing light attached. The store and its petrol stationwere evac-

uated and the Army bomb disposal team was called. CCTV showed a man entering the Morrisons

store earlier that day and buying a Morrisons own-brand Christmas card. After Williams was identified as the suspect, his house was searched and officers recovered the card, which was ad- dressed to his partner. Williams was charged with blackmail and was sentenced by Maidstone Crown to two years and eight months in prison. Detective Inspector Lee Whitehead, from the

Kent and Essex Serious Crime Directorate, said: “This incident caused a lot of unnecessary con- cern for innocent people and took up a significant amount of police resources. Blackmail is a very serious offence, and I’m pleased that the courts punishedWilliams with a custodial sentence.”

Parking spaces are turned down ASCHEMEto provide four extra parking spaces at elderly residential complex Eylesden Court in Bearsted Green has been refused. Applicant Cognatum wanted to enlarge an existing parking area

to reduce on-street parking, which was considered dangerous. But Maidstone Council said the proposal would be harmful to

the conservation area as it would lead to the introduction of hard- standing on landscaped areas. It was also argued the development would add to the noise and disturbance experienced by residents in properties to the north-west of the site.
