Quick action saves wasp sting victim

A WALK with the dog nearly proved fatal for a Bearsted man when a wasp sting sent him into shock. Gary Christie (42), from Yeo-

man Park, was walking through the fields behindMallardsWay when he realised a wasp had got under his sweatshirt. Gary knocked the wasp off and carried on walking – but by the time he reached the Green, his whole body had started to itch and he was sweating profusely. Having been stung bywasps in

the past, Gary thought little of it and went home, where he de- cided to cool off in the shower. Butwhenhetookoff his clothes, he was horrified to find his entire body, from the knees up, covered in blistering red hives. Gary dialled 111 and was ad-

visedtogotoA&E,but, after speaking with his wife Jo, who was out for the day with their seven-year old daughter Is- abelle, he decided to head for the Bearsted Medical Practice in Yeoman Lane. By the time he arrived at the surgery, less than an hour after being stung, his blood pressure had dropped to dangerous lev- els and his heart was racing. A medical team sprang into action, putting him on oxygen and a drip and giving him mas- sive shots of anti-histamine, while calling for an ambulance The wasp sting had triggered anaphylaxis – an allergic reac- tion, which can lead to death if not treated quickly.

Airfield history DETLING and West Malling’s role in the Battle of Britain is described in a new booklet. The airfields and the part they played in winning the war of the sky over the South East in 1940 were pivotal in preventing a seabourne German invasion. Fight for the Skies – The Bat-

tle of Britain, 1940 – is written by former Naval man Dick Collinson, who will share the profits with Armed Forces’ charities. The booklet costs £5.

“Because I’d had wasp stings before, I didn’t think this could happen tome,” said Gary. “But, apparently, you can be at an even higher risk of having an anaphylactic reaction if you’ve had a lot of wasp stings. “If the doctors hadn’t acted so quickly, I might not be here.” An anaphylactic reaction gen-

erally occurs quite quickly and will often include a rash. Swelling, itching, runny eyes and nose, difficulty in breathing and chest pains are among the symptoms. Gary, who works as a mainte-

nance engineer in Dartford, now carries two EpiPens, to adminis- ter drugs, as he has been warned a future shock could be even worse. As well as thanking the doc-

tors and nurses at Bearsted Medical Centre, Gary wants to spread the message to others . He said: “I want people to

read my story and realise it might happen to them – and what they must do. If you expe- rience any of the symptoms, don’t wait – it could be too late.”
