Lola gets back her life – and her name

EVERYONE likes a story with a happy ending - and this one had us smiling at the Downs Mail office. It all started so traumatically for Lola. This lovely

little Jack Russell was pregnant and close to death when she was abandoned, sealed in a cardboard box, in woods on Penenden Heath, Maidstone. After being spotted by a passer-by the young

pup was rushed to a vet's for an emergency Cae- sarian before being transferred to the RSPCA centre at Leybourne, where the staff called her Daisy.

She was looked after there for three weeks

before going back to the veterinary centre at Newnham Court, where she had the initial op- eration. Robyn Stevens, who works there, said they

had called her Lola when she was first brought in. She and her boyfriend, David Miles, could not resist taking Lola back to their home in Marden. Lola has now recovered from her ordeal -

and is lapping up the attention. "She's happy as long as she's on someone's

lap - she's a real princess now!" said Robyn, of Staplehurst Road. But she cannot comprehend how Lola's owners could have been so cruel. "Her uterus had ruptured and we feared she may have peritonitis. What was going through their minds when they did that."

KCC has been given planning permission to convert agricultural land for use as a school playing field next to Collier Street Primary School. However, the county

Now, a £1,000 reward is being offered by an-

imal rights organisation PETA for information leading to a conviction for this crime. Call 020 7357 9229. Meanwhile, unlike in Lola’s case, it was a

far from happy ending for another dog, which was found drowned in the River Medway at Maidstone. The tan terrier bitch had been tied up in a

weighted-down carrier bag. RSPCA inspector Ray Bailey said: "This was a callous act. The dog was obviously deliberately killed." The bag was spotted close to the Millennium Bridge near the Archbishop's Palace on Satur- day, October 30. The bolt cutters used to weigh it down were

heavy and distinctive. If you have any infor- mation, call Mr Bailey on 0300 123 4999.

council says it has no imminent plans to undertake the project. Maidstone Coun- cil said it would like to see the existing boundary treatments retained.

Firefighter heroes remembered in

new development THE heroics of three firemen who lost their lives while on duty will be marked in the large new housing de- velopment to the rear of Maidstone Fire Station. Two years ago, Maidstone Council granted planning consent for 122 new homes at the back of the Loose Road headquarters. Developer Taylor Wimpey has

agreed that the development’s two new access roads will be called The Far- rows and Hawkes Way in memory of three names on its roll of honour. Albert Farrow and John Fawkeswere among the three firefighters who per- ished in a fire at the former Oakwood Hospital on November 29 1957. Tragically, Albert’s son Malcolm Far-

row died on September 3 1970, when a water tender skidded on a wet surface in College Road, hit a tree and burst into flames. South ward borough Cllr John EWil-

son made the suggestion of using names from the roll of honour to the developer, who agreed after consulting staff from the fire station. The main construction work is yet to

start. Drunk and disorderly

SHANE Richard Prebble (31), of Council Cot- tages, Gallants Lane, East Farleigh, was fined £67 for drunk and disorderly behaviour in Mill Street, Maidstone. He also had to pay a £60 costs.
